A library theme can change the job of your answer
- Original familiar question: “Do you use a library?” “Yes, I go on Mondays because it is quiet” answers with a personal routine. “Why might cities maintain libraries?” asks for a broader explanation, such as access to study space for people with crowded homes.
- A long-turn card might instead ask for a place where you studied and why you remember it. Develop one place and experience. The theme is similar, but the question has changed jobs; your favourite desk cannot chair every city policy debate.

The interview has three parts and is recorded
- Speaking lasts 11–14 minutes, with a live examiner. It is recorded, but you answer the examiner’s questions rather than speaking to prerecorded prompts. Academic and General Training use the same Speaking format.
- Part 1 lasts 4–5 minutes and asks about familiar topics such as home, study or interests. Answer the question and add relevant information naturally. There is no fixed requirement of exactly three sentences for each reply.

The examiner conducts a live interview which is also recorded. These are different meanings of recorded.
Part 2 gives preparation time for one long turn
- The examiner supplies a task card and gives you one minute to prepare, with paper and a pencil for notes. Then develop the topic for up to two minutes; the examiner stops the turn when time is up and may ask one or two related questions.
- Use keywords to recall a route through the points and requested explanation. Three prompts can help one card, while another may need more. The number of notes is a practice choice; writing a full script can consume time needed to organise the answer.

The Part 2 card requires exactly three written keywords.

There is a preparation minute, but no compulsory note count. Use brief cues suited to the actual card.
Part 3 moves to general issues
- Part 3 lasts 4–5 minutes and develops issues related to the long-turn theme at a more general or abstract level. For libraries, explain a possible public benefit, who might gain from it, and a relevant limitation when useful.
- “My desk is near a window” can fit a place description, but alone does not explain why cities fund libraries. Listen for why, how, comparison or speculation; choose development that answers the demand rather than replaying the same story.

A fixed speech may not answer the actual card or follow-up. Prepare relevant details and practise flexible responses rather than assuming the examiner asks for your script.
Repair understanding and keep responding
- If you did not hear a question, ask briefly for repetition. In Part 3, a short clarification request can help with an unclear term. Answer the question as clarified; this is not a way to request an easier topic or an examiner-supplied argument.
- If a word is missing, paraphrase its meaning: “the material in a wall that stops heat escaping” can convey insulation. A short correction can repair a tense error; repeated restarts may disrupt the answer. Practise repair inside a conversation, not only as isolated phrases.

Rehearse the task and review actual speech
- Record a long-turn attempt after a minute of notes, then review relevance, development and one audible feature. Follow with a different question to check flexible use. Text answers can test the distinctions here, but cannot measure pronunciation or establish a Speaking band.
- Format checked on 2 October 2026: official IELTS Speaking guide; clarification guidance: IDP Part 3 advice. The library cases are original practice.
- Match the question’s scope, develop relevant ideas and use audio to review how you actually delivered them.

Part 1 may ask whether you use a library. A long-turn card may ask for a place you studied. A broader question may ask how libraries can serve changing communities. A personal routine fits the first; a developed place and experience fit the second; an explanation with examples fits the third. Keep listening to the demand as the theme develops.
