A first meeting
-
You meet a new classmate. Start with one useful word: hello你好 — hello.
-
Listen, then repeat. Pinyin is a guide to sound: nǐ hǎo. You do not need to memorise every character today.
-
Before you start: No Mandarin is required. Notice whether a situation calls for greeting, thanking, apologising or leaving; those are different social actions.
Before learning the Mandarin phrases: someone lends you a pen. What do you want your reply to do?

Receiving help calls for thanks. You will learn the Mandarin phrase next; this check asks about the situation, not prior Mandarin knowledge.
Three more useful phrases
- to thank谢谢 xièxie — thank you; not不polite客气 bú kèqi — you’re welcome. The second syllable of to thank谢谢 is light.
- I'm sorry对不起 duìbuqǐ — sorry; goodbye再见 zàijiàn — goodbye. Learn these as whole phrases.
Choose by the situation
- A classmate lends you a pen: to thank谢谢. They reply: not不polite客气. A compliment can also be answered with to thank谢谢.
- You bump into someone: I'm sorry对不起. You leave: goodbye再见. hello你好 is not limited to one time of day.
A: hello你好! B: hello你好! A: to thank谢谢。 B: not不polite客气。 — Hello; hello; thank you; you’re welcome.
Work through a decision: When someone hands you the pen you needed, to thank谢谢 acknowledges their help. If they reply not不polite客气, they are responding to your thanks. Identify who received help before choosing the phrase.
Compare a near miss: not不polite客气 is a natural response to thanks, but it does not replace to thank谢谢 when you are the one receiving help. I'm sorry对不起 apologises; it would fit bumping into someone, not simply borrowing their pen.

You provided help and received thanks, so 不客气 fits. 对不起 would apologise; 再见 would take leave. Reverse the roles and the person receiving help uses 谢谢.
Try listening before reading
- Play this phrase and choose its meaning in the practice.
- Replay as often as you need. If playback is unavailable, read the phrases aloud; that is reading practice rather than a listening check.
In hello你好, two third-tone syllables occur together: the first sounds like a rising second tone. Written pinyin usually keeps nǐ hǎo. These phrases differ in consonants and vowels as well as tones.
What does the phrase mean?

Wang Li receives the pen and says 谢谢. Lin An replies 不客气. Track the named speakers, not just the order of names in the opening sentence. 谢谢 is thanks, not an apology.
Use it with someone
- Without looking, greet a classmate, thank them for a pen, and say goodbye. Alone? Say both parts of the example, then change the situation.
- Tomorrow, recall the three phrases before reopening this page. If one is missing, listen and repeat it again.
hello你好 greets; to thank谢谢 thanks; not不polite客气 replies to thanks; I'm sorry对不起 apologises; goodbye再见 takes leave.
Next: say your name. For sound practice, visit Chinese Foundations.
Later recall: Tomorrow, recall a greeting, thanks and farewell before reopening the page. Change who lends the pen and explain which person says to thank谢谢. A few days later, contrast receiving help with bumping into someone; revisit “Choose by the situation” if the phrases become mixed.
Put this brief exchange in order: arrive, thank a classmate for help, leave.

The situation specifies arrival, help, then departure.
Write a short Mandarin exchange for a new situation: arrive, receive help and leave. Include the helper’s reply to your thanks. Say both roles aloud or work with a partner. Then change the middle event to accidentally bumping into someone and write the phrase you would use instead.
Compare and revise your own wording. Written self-review does not assess pronunciation or conversation quality.
