Prepositions and connectors

Time, place and reasons

- Outcome: write a short plan with its day, time and place, and explain a reason without reversing it. Start with prepositions of place.
- Starting check: does at the bus stop say someone is inside a bus? No: it identifies a meeting location.
We study at six on Monday in April. The calendar approves.
Learn time phrases together
- Common patterns: at nine, on Monday, on May 1st, in July, in 2020. Learn the phrase, not just the length of time.
- Compare in the morning with on Monday morning. At night is another common phrase. These choices are not a universal small-to-large rule.
- Usually no time preposition before next Monday, last July or this morning: I'll call next Monday.
- Varieties differ: at the weekend is common in British English; on the weekend is common in American English. Match the meaning and variety rather than calling one universally wrong.
at, in or on? (time)
Practise these common at/on/in time combinations; learn exceptions and full phrases rather than a universal size rule.
Choose the correct preposition: The class starts ___ 9 o'clock.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
A clock time uses “at”: at 9 o'clock.
Use on with a named day and in with a month. Choose the matching pair for a Monday in June.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
On Monday and in June are the common combinations. The wrong pairs exchange the prepositions without preserving these phrases. Next try: give another day and month.
Choose the view of a place
- At can identify a location: Meet me at the bus stop. In can identify an inside position: The ticket is in my bag.
- On can describe a surface: The book is on the table. But on the bus commonly means travelling as a passenger, not sitting on the bus roof.
- At the office locates someone at their workplace; in the office focuses on being inside. The same person can satisfy both descriptions.
Complete: The book is ___ the table. (surface)
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
A surface uses “on”: on the table.
Learn at night as a phrase. Complete: The street is quiet ___.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
At night is the common phrase used here. In the night can describe something happening during a particular night, but bare in night is not that construction. Next try: compare at night with in the morning.
Link the intended ideas
- And adds, but contrasts and or offers alternatives: We can walk or take a bus.
- So introduces a result: The shop was closed, so we went home. Because introduces a reason: We went home because the shop was closed.
- The reason can come first: Because the shop was closed, we went home. Keep the reason and result the same when changing the order.
Choose the connector: She stayed home ___ it was raining.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
“it was raining” is the reason → use “because”. (so introduces a result.)
Translate into English: 我累了,所以去睡觉了。
難易度 3/5 · 200 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
I was tired, so I went to bed gives a result. I went to bed because I was tired keeps the same reason and result with another natural frame. The translation does not require the literal word so.
An inside position can use in. The pass is inside a small pocket. Choose the matching statement.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
In the pocket identifies the stated inside location. On and behind describe other positions. Next try: describe a pass resting on a table.
Repair a pattern, not every use of a word
- In standard written English, avoid the doubled cause/result frame Because it rained, so we stayed in. Write Because it rained, we stayed in or It rained, so we stayed in.
- This is not a ban on both words in a longer sentence. Because it was late, we spoke quietly so that the baby could sleep combines a reason with a purpose. It does not establish that the baby actually slept.
- Say on Monday, in July, listen to music. Common phrases need their own prepositions; next Monday needs none in the time phrase above.
at, on or in? Match the time.
難易度 2/5 · 140 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
at + clock time, on + day, in + month / year / season.
Choose the standard written sentence using one result-so link for this single cause/result pair.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
It rained, so we stayed in links the cause to its result once. Because it rained, we stayed in is another standard frame. The other options double this same link or leave an extra so. A longer sentence can contain because plus purpose so that without this error; check their jobs rather than banning both words.
Because introduces a reason. The bus was late, and that made us wait. Choose the sentence that keeps this relation.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The late bus is the reason for waiting. The first sentence reverses the causal relation; but marks a contrast rather than explaining it. Next try: express the same relation with result so.
- Learn time combinations: at nine, on Monday morning, in July, at night and next Monday.
- Check what the connector introduces: a reason, a result or a purpose. Changing the connector can change the claim.
Write one sentence that gives a reason, using because followed by a reason clause. (For example: why you like something.)
難易度 3/5 · 200 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
I like winter because I can play in the snow is one option. Because I can play in the snow, I like winter puts the reason first and can also fit. Keep the same reason when changing the order.
Result so goes before the result. A shop closed, and we went elsewhere as a result. Choose the matching frame.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The shop closed, so we went elsewhere gives the cause before the result. The other options make our leaving explain the closure. Next try: put because before the shop-closure reason.
Three worked contrasts
- Same part of day, different phrase: I read in the morning describes a usual period. The test is on Tuesday morning names a particular day's morning. Do not choose in just because both contain morning.
- Location or inside: Meet at the library names the meeting place but does not specify an indoor room. Wait in the reading room gives an inside position. If an entrance meeting matters, name it explicitly.
- Reason or purpose: The room was noisy, so we left reports a result. We left so that we could talk quietly gives a goal. Because the room was noisy, we left so that we could talk quietly can contain both reason and purpose without doubling the same cause/result link.
Choose the standard time phrase for a test on a particular day’s morning.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
On Tuesday morning names the morning of that particular day. In the morning is a different common phrase without a named day. Repair: learn the complete phrase rather than treating morning as an automatic signal for in.
Complete this ordinary future plan: I’ll call you ___ next Monday.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Next Monday normally needs no time preposition in this plan. On Monday is a common phrase, but adding next changes the pattern. Next try: write a plan for this afternoon without inserting at.
A notice says, “Because the hall was noisy, we moved so that everyone could hear.” What does it establish?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The because-clause gives the reason; so that gives a purpose. The sentence does not guarantee the purpose was achieved, and the two links do different jobs. Repair: distinguish a goal from a proven result. Next try: say what evidence would show whether the move worked.
Make a plan; review the meaning
- Try the fresh decisions, then write the English plan before opening its model. Check every day, time and location and the reason for the change. Revise one mismatch.
- Tomorrow, write one pair of sentences about a real plan: use because in one and result so in the other, keeping the same reason and result. Add one date phrase without looking back.
- Continue with listening for times and arrangements. This page practises written forms; interpreting written times does not show that you heard a recording accurately.
Usage references: Cambridge, at/on/in for time, place and reason, result and purpose. Original examples; independent language/key and learner review pending.
Facts: a study meeting was planned for Monday. The room is unavailable that day, so the meeting is now on Tuesday morning at nine, at the library entrance. Write a short English message with the new day, time and precise meeting place; use because to explain the change. Do not claim the meeting has already happened. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the stated facts and checklist. Repair a real mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit. This is written self-review, not an automatic correctness or proficiency result.
Keep the time, place and reason together
- Read the entire time phrase and the relation between events. Keep a goal separate from an observed result, and name a precise meeting point when it matters.
- Try about half the practice today and half in another session. About 45–60 minutes across study, decisions and writing is a planning suggestion, not a test time or a measured level.
Choose the standard time phrase for a lesson beginning at 8:30.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
At half past eight gives a clock time in this phrase. On and in do not fit the stated clock-time frame. Next try: express the same time with digits.
Choose the standard time phrase for an appointment on a named date.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
On March 12th names the date. In March names the month without that date; at does not form this date phrase. Next try: write a different complete date phrase.
A course runs during August. Choose the common month phrase.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
In August names the month period. On and at do not form this ordinary month phrase. Next try: name a year using its common time phrase.
Which ordinary time expression needs no added preposition before last?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Last April normally takes no time preposition in this sentence. In April is a useful month phrase, but adding last changes this pattern. Next try: replace last April with this morning.
Choose the ordinary expression for an action earlier today.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
This morning normally needs no added time preposition here. In the morning is a different phrase. Next try: give a future plan using next Tuesday.
A routine happens during mornings, without naming a day. Choose the matching phrase.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
In the morning is the common phrase for this period. On Tuesday morning would name a particular day, but that is not one of these options. Next try: add a named day and adjust the preposition.
A poster gives a particular evening’s event. Choose the standard phrase.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
On Friday evening combines a named day with a part of that day. In the evening works without Friday; do not choose from the word evening alone. Next try: write a named day’s afternoon phrase.
A friend writes, “I study at night.” Does at mean that night must be shorter than a morning?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
At night is a common combination; the at/on/in choices are not a universal measure of duration. In the morning is also standard. Next try: give both phrases without comparing their lengths.
One message says at the weekend; another says on the weekend. Which judgment is supported?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
At the weekend is common in British English; on the weekend is common in American English. Neither is universally wrong. Next try: keep one variety consistent in a short plan.
You are told to meet at a museum, with no room or entrance named. What can you safely infer?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
At the museum identifies the location without specifying a gallery or roof. Ask for a more precise spot if you need one. Next try: write a message naming the entrance.
A traveller writes, “I’m on the bus.” Which ordinary interpretation fits?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
On the bus commonly describes a passenger’s situation; it does not require being on the roof. This use is learned as a whole phrase. Next try: identify why the surface-only shortcut would mislead you.
A colleague is inside the office building at work. Which pair can both be true?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
At locates the colleague at the workplace; in can focus on the inside position. The two descriptions need not contradict each other. Under gives a different relation. Next try: explain which phrase more clearly says inside.
The printer broke, and that made Lee use another one. Choose the sentence preserving this reason.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Because gives the broken printer as the reason for choosing another. The second reverses the relation; but adds contrast rather than this reason. Next try: put the reason first with Because.
A road was closed, and as a result the bus took a different route. Choose the matching result sentence.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
The closed road is the cause and the different route is the result. The other choices reverse that explanation. Next try: express the same relation with because.
Which standard written sentence puts the reason clause first without doubling the same cause/result link?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Because the lift was broken, we used the stairs gives a reason clause and a main clause. Adding result so doubles this same link in the other options. Next try: write the equivalent sentence beginning with the lift.
A note says, “We sat near the front so that we could see.” What does it establish?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
So that we could see states the purpose. It does not prove that the view was clear or describe the seats moving. Next try: add a separate observation if you want to report whether the plan worked.
A friend offers, “We can walk or take a taxi.” What choice is offered?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Or presents alternatives here. It does not require simultaneous actions or claim a causal relation. Next try: write a reply selecting one option.
A message says, “The room is small, but it has a good view.” What does but do here?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
But marks the contrast between the small room and its good view. It gives neither a cause nor a time. Next try: keep both facts while writing a similar contrast about another room.
Retrieve and revise later
- Tomorrow, try the two review decisions and the new meeting message before rereading. Keep the cancelled arrangement separate from the replacement plan.
- Compare with the concealed writing model after your attempt. Repair one fact or form, or explain why no repair is needed. These written checks support study; they do not certify independent mastery or speaking/listening proficiency.
Review later: choose the ordinary written plan for a particular day’s afternoon.
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
On Thursday afternoon is the common named-day combination. In the afternoon works without Thursday; at does not fit this phrase. Next try: write the same plan using next Thursday afternoon without a time preposition.
Review later: “Because the café was busy, we went outside so that we could talk.” Which interpretation fits?
難易度 1/5 · 100 コイン + 今日初回完了時に小ボーナス付与
Because states the reason for moving; so that states a purpose. The message does not prove the purpose was achieved. Next try: add a sentence reporting the actual result without changing the original reason.
Return later without rereading. Facts: a Friday meeting is cancelled because the host is away. The new meeting is next Monday at ten at the south entrance of the museum. Write a short English message naming the old cancellation and reason, plus the new day, time and place. Use a because-clause. Compare and revise.
Compare your English with the facts and checklist. Revise a real mismatch, or explain why none is present. Several answers can fit. This written self-review does not automatically mark your answer correct or establish proficiency.
