Talking about the future

Timeline: "will" marks an action in the future
  • Outcome: make clear offers, intentions and predictions, and recognise arranged or scheduled future events. English has several ways to talk about the future.
  • Here we focus on will and be going to; present forms can also refer to the future.
  • Their uses overlap. Start with present continuous and am/is/are. Quick check: can The train leaves tomorrow refer to the future? Yes; a present form can give a timetable. Allow about 45–60 minutes across sessions, including later review; this is a study suggestion.

I am going to study tonight; my phone has other plans.
