| preposition/ˌprepəˈzɪʃn/ | A word that relates a noun or pronoun to another part of a sentence, often indicating place, time or direction. |
Choosing the right word
- A text says: "I went to the cinema with my friends and we ___ a great film." Options: made, saw, looked, watched at.
- Only saw fits: we see (or watch) a film; "looked" needs "at", and "watched at" is wrong. A2 Key cloze tests vocabulary and grammar in context.
Part 4: multiple-choice cloze
- Six gaps in a text; each has three options. The words often have similar meanings, so think about which one fits the words around the gap.
- Check collocations 搭配 (words that go together): take a photo, do homework, make a mistake, go shopping.
Make, do, take or go?

Part 5: open cloze
- Six gaps, no options: write one word. It is usually a grammar word: a preposition 介词 (in, at, on), an article (a, the), a pronoun (it, them), an auxiliary (is, was, have), or a linker (and, but, because).
- Read the whole sentence: "I have lived here ___ 2019" → since.
"Last summer we went ___ holiday to Spain. ___ weather was hot and we swam every day." → on, The.
I have lived in this town ____ 2019. (one word)

Use the grammar clues
- After a verb like "enjoy" comes -ing: "I enjoy swimming". After "can" comes the base form: "She can swim".
- Time words tell you the tense: "yesterday" → past; "every day" → present simple.
My brother enjoys ___ football.

Enjoy + -ing.
Common mistakes
- Writing two words in an open-cloze gap (only one word is allowed).
- Choosing a word with the right meaning but the wrong collocation (make a photo ✗).
In the open cloze (Part 5), you can write two words if they fit better.

Only one word is allowed.
Recap
- Part 4: meaning plus collocation; Part 5: one grammar word that the sentence needs.
- Use clues: verb patterns, time words and the words on both sides of the gap.
Write from arrived at
- "We arrived ____ the museum" needs at. "The lesson is ____ Monday" needs on.
- Part 5 still asks for one grammatical word. Reread the whole sentence.
Which one word completes We arrived ____ the museum, and why is on the wrong choice there?
The place and the verb choose the preposition. A memorised translation of arrived is not enough.
Which word completes We arrived ____ the museum?

At is the preposition for arriving at the museum. On marks a day. Because is a linking word, not the place.
