Walls that record pressure
- An organ is a tissue arrangement that solves a physiological problem. The three great tube systems, vessels, airways and gut, show their job in their walls.
- Read the layers and you read the pressures and the traffic.
Vessel walls
- The tunica intima 内膜 is the endothelium. The tunica media 中膜 is smooth muscle: thick in arteries, thin in veins. The tunica adventitia 外膜 is an outer collagen coat.
- Arteries carry a high-pressure pulse, so a thick elastic and muscular media smooths it. Veins carry low-pressure volume: thin walls, a wide lumen and valves.

Which layer is much thicker in an artery than in its companion vein?

The smooth-muscle media handles the high, pulsing arterial pressure; veins carry low pressure and have thin walls.
From bronchus to alveolus
- The airway wall thins step by step, losing cartilage, glands and muscle. At the alveolus 肺泡 the wall is one flat cell over the capillaries.
- The blood–air barrier is about 0.5 µm: everything that is not needed for exchange has been removed.
The alveolar wall contains smooth muscle and glands, like a bronchus.

The alveolus keeps only what exchange needs: one flat cell, a basement membrane and the capillary wall.
The gut wall
- From the inside: mucosa 黏膜 (epithelium, lamina propria, a thin muscle layer), then submucosa 黏膜下层, then the muscularis externa 肌层 (inner circular, outer longitudinal).
- The outer coat is serosa 浆膜 where the gut is covered by peritoneum, adventitia where it is not. The two muscle coats push contents along.
Put the layers of the gut wall in order, from the lumen outwards.

Lining, support with vessels and nerves, the propulsive muscle coats, then the outer cover.
Worked example: artery or vein?
- A vessel with a round lumen and a thick media filling most of its wall is an artery. A floppy, wide vessel with a thin wall is its companion vein.
- The look is the pressure record: an artery is mostly media, a vein mostly lumen.
Two vessels sit side by side. One has a thick wall and a round lumen; one is wide and floppy. Which is the artery?

A thick media keeps the artery's lumen round; the low-pressure vein collapses into an irregular shape.
Worked example: a wall too thick for gas
- (Fictional case) Breathless, with clear airways. The alveolar walls have thickened (a fibrosis pattern): the 0.5 µm barrier is now several µm.
- Diffusion falls in proportion to thickness, so O₂ uptake, not airflow, is the limit. An inhaler cannot help: the problem is in the wall, not the tube.
Fibrosis thickens the alveolar barrier from 0.5 µm to 2.5 µm. By what factor does diffusion fall, if it is inversely proportional to thickness?
Kesulitan 2/5 · 140 koin + bonus kecil pada penyelesaian pertama hari ini
2.5 / 0.5 = 5, so diffusion falls to a fifth: exchange, not airflow, is the problem.
Three common slips
- Every inner layer is "mucosa". Vessels have an intima; mucosa belongs to wet tubes such as the gut and airways.
- Forgetting the two gut coats. Inner circular squeezes; outer longitudinal shortens.
- Alveoli like small bronchi. They are the opposite: almost everything removed.
Match each innermost layer to its tube.

Vessels have an intima; wet tubes such as the gut have a mucosa; the alveolus is reduced to a single flat cell.
Recap
- Vessels: intima, media, adventitia; media thickness tracks pressure.
- Gut: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, serosa.
- Alveolus: a 0.5 µm barrier; thicken it and gas exchange fails.
