B2 listening follows arguments, not just sentences.
An argument is a spine: claim, reason, evidence, concession, and the claim restated stronger.
Discourse markers are the road signs that tell you a turn is coming before it arrives: however, admittedly, in fact, to sum up.
And media voices, hosts, guests, interviews and podcasts, fight politely for the floor with interruptions, hedges and quoted voices. Listen for the turns.
The words where the argument changes direction carry the meaning.
The argument spine has five parts. The claim: I firmly believe the school day should start later. The reason: because teenagers sleep on a different clock. The evidence: one study found later starts raised results by four percent. The concession: admittedly, buses would cost more. And the restatement: even so, my point stands, the gain outweighs the cost. The concession is not surrender; it is armour. The speaker concedes a small point to prove they have seen both sides, and then the claim returns stronger.
B2 speakers mark their turns openly, and the markers come in families. Contrast: however, on the other hand, whereas; a turn is coming. Concession: admittedly, granted, to be fair; a point conceded before a counter. Emphasis: in fact, crucially, the truth is; the load-bearing point is arriving. Structure: first, finally, to sum up; your place in the argument. The contrasts are the loudest signs of all, because however is nearly always followed by the speaker's real position.
话语标记分家族:对比家族(however、on the other hand)预告转向;让步家族(admittedly、granted)先认后反;强调家族(in fact、crucially)标记承重点;结构家族(first、to sum up)报位置。
Interviews and podcasts have their own choreography. The host's question sets the topic, and the guest is first sentence either answers it or dodges it; catch which. Interruptions are polite combat: sorry, can I just add, marks a point the speaker could not wait to make. Quoted voices shift responsibility: critics say the plan will fail is the host's claim wearing a critic coat. And hedge clusters, sort of, I mean, you know, mark thinking aloud; the unfinished sentence just before them often carries the real point.
Sorry, can I just add 是憋不住的观点;Critics say 是主持人借别人的嘴说自己的主张;you know、I mean 是边想边说,它们前面那半句常是真正的要点。
Watch out for three traps. Do not treat a concession as agreement: admittedly, X is almost always followed by however, Y, so wait for the turn before you note the position. Numbers arrive with spin: only four percent and fully four percent are the same data in opposite uniforms, and the spin lives in the adverb, not the number. And stress decides: the word the speaker stresses in a sentence is the word to write down.
Check yourself. Name the five parts of the argument spine in order.
What does admittedly promise, and what does however?
Whose claim is critics say the plan will fail?
Critics say
And the spin check: only four percent against fully four percent, same data or different?
If the spine sorts the stream, the argument is yours to keep.
