Read in Daily Life — two campus messages
הוצגהמיקום המנוהל נשמר בדפדפן הזה. המשך אינו משלים את השיעור או עונה על שאלותיו.
A booking rule can change at two different times
- Outcome: identify the purpose and decisive evidence in a practical text, preserve its conditions and choose the right action. Start with daily-life reading principles. A reservation opening time, a release condition and a building closing time answer different questions.
The notice and email in this lesson are original campus scenarios. They are practice, not ETS questions.
Library study pods
From 4 October, pods on Level 2 can be booked online in 90-minute blocks. Same-day reservations open at 08:00. A booking is released if no member of the group checks in within 15 minutes of its start. Students who need a ground-floor pod can request one by email at least one working day ahead; a same-day allocation cannot be guaranteed. Food is not allowed, but drinks with lids are. Pods close at 20:30, although the library building stays open until 22:00. Bookings made before 4 October keep their original end times.
The notice has several clocks. Match each clock to its event: when booking opens, when an unattended booking is released, and when pods close. The building's closing time is a different fact.
View the original-notice clock map at full size
A polite notice can still close the door exactly on time.
At what time do same-day pod reservations open? Copy the time from the notice.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
'Same-day reservations open at 08:00.' The 20:30 and 22:00 times describe two different closing events.
Read a condition all the way to its exception
Worked case: Mei's pod reservation starts at 10:00. Nobody in her group checks in by 10:16. The booking is released: the notice allows 15 minutes after the start, not 15 minutes after someone first reaches the building.
The final sentence creates a separate exception. A booking made before 4 October keeps its original end time, even though the new pod-closing rule applies from that date. Do not apply a new rule to an old booking without checking this sentence.
If you are asked, “Can I stay in a pod until 22:00 because the library is open?”, answer no for a new booking. The pod closes at 20:30; the building closes at 22:00.
A pod booking starts at 10:00. Nobody in the group has checked in by 10:16. What happens?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
A booking is released after 15 minutes without a group member checking in. By 10:16 that window has passed.
An email can separate what changed from what did not
Subject: Room change for the archive-skills workshop
Hi Mara, Friday's workshop has moved from Lab 4 to Seminar Room B because the projector in Lab 4 is being repaired. It still starts at 14:00. Please bring a laptop; printed handouts will be supplied. If you registered but cannot attend, cancel through the booking link by Thursday at noon so someone on the waiting list can take your place. Please do not reply to this message; it was sent automatically.
— Student Skills Office
Only the room changed. The start time remains 14:00. The email also separates what you bring (laptop) from what the office supplies (printed handouts).
Which TWO workshop details are correct?
Difficulty 2/5 · 140 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The time stays 14:00 and handouts are supplied. The room changes to Seminar Room B, and participants bring a laptop.
Follow the named action channel
If you cannot attend, the email says to use the booking link by Thursday at noon. Replying to the email will not cancel the booking; it is automated. The reason is practical: cancelling releases a place for someone on the waiting list.
Do not answer from a familiar habit such as “reply to the sender.” Read the channel named in this message. A polite email can contain a firm deadline.
Mara cannot attend the Friday workshop. What should she do?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The email names both channel and deadline: booking link, Thursday at noon. It explicitly says not to reply.
Four things to mark in any daily-life text
- Purpose: Is this text informing, requesting, changing or cancelling something?
- Who and when: Which person, date or booking does each rule cover?
- Exceptions: But, although, if and before can reverse a quick first impression.
- Action: What should the reader do, and by which channel or deadline?
The correct answer is the one that fits this reader's situation and this text's exact conditions. A plausible campus custom is not evidence.
ETS lists short daily-life texts such as notices and messages in this Reading task. Task description checked on 19 October 2026: ETS TOEFL iBT Reading section.
A student may take a drink with a lid into a study pod.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The notice prohibits food but explicitly permits drinks with lids. The exception matters more than a general 'no food' impression.
Check a new exception without forgetting the old rule
- Original extra notice: “The library closes at six. Reserved study-room users may remain until seven, but must leave through the side exit.” A room reservation changes the leaving time, not the required exit.
- A student without a reservation still leaves by six. A reserved user leaving at half past six uses the side exit. Separate permission from the procedure attached to it.
View the original exit-rule case at full size
- Permission to stay later is not permission to use any exit or to bring unreserved visitors. Read only what the notice grants.
- Resolve who, when and how before deciding what the reader should do.
- Try the transfer checks below before returning to the explanation. These are original self-checks, with no official score conversion.
Match the three distinctions from the worked case.
Difficulty 2/5 · 140 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
A student without a reservation still leaves by six. A reserved user leaving at half past six uses the side exit. Separate permission from the procedure attached to it.
Which instruction applies to a reserved user leaving at 6:30?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Original extra notice: “The library closes at six. Reserved study-room users may remain until seven, but must leave through the side exit.” A room reservation changes the leaving time, not the required exit. A student without a reservation still leaves by six. A reserved user leaving at half past six uses the side exit. Separate permission from the procedure attached to it.
Complete the worked-case label: No reservation → ____. Use the phrase in the diagram.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Resolve who, when and how before deciding what the reader should do.
A later message may change only one detail
- Original pair: Message 1: “The print demonstration starts at noon in Studio 3. Bring your student card; paper is supplied.” Message 2: “Use Studio 5 instead. The time and preparation instructions are unchanged.” Replace the room while retaining noon, the card and supplied paper. Moving every detail would answer a message nobody sent.
- Compare “Could we use the room?”, “I can offer the room if you reply” and “Your booking is confirmed.” A request, conditional offer and confirmation do different jobs. Having enough people to request a room does not establish that the date is available. Read the actual next step rather than treating polite wording as automatic approval.
Follow the cue, then explain the decisive wording
- Ten guided checks identify a text’s purpose, a requested detail, a word in context or an implied action. Use the reading cue, choose, then locate the exact wording that makes the answer work. A nearby true fact may still answer the wrong question.
- Keep conditions together: who + when + exception + action. If the text leaves a fee, approval or later date undecided, do not replace that gap with a familiar service policy. These are originally authored learning questions, not official ETS items or an adaptive test.
Original practical text:
Pool notice: On Thursday, the pool opens at 11:00 instead of 07:00 for maintenance. The gym opens at its usual time. Lessons booked before 11:00 will be rescheduled by the office; participants will receive a separate message.
Reading cue: Identify what changes and what remains unchanged.
Question: What is the notice mainly doing? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The notice changes Thursday’s pool opening and explains the effect on early lessons. The gym is explicitly unchanged, and individual replacement times are not supplied. Repair: separate the announcement’s purpose from details that will arrive later.
Original practical text:
Bike-desk notice: Reservations for loan bicycles open online at 09:00. Collection begins at 10:00. Collect within twenty minutes of your selected time or the bicycle may be offered to another borrower. Returns are accepted until 18:00.
Reading cue: Match the requested action to its own clock.
Question: When can a borrower first collect a bicycle? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Collection begins at 10:00; 09:00 concerns reservations, twenty minutes is a collection window, and 18:00 concerns returns. Repair: attach each time to its named action before choosing.
Original practical text:
Message from the course office: Your interview is at 15:30 in Room 6. Upload your project summary through the applicant portal by Wednesday evening. Bring photo identification to the interview. Please do not send attachments by reply email.
Reading cue: Find the advance action, its channel and its deadline.
Question: What must the applicant do before the interview? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The message names a document, channel and deadline for the advance action. Identification is brought to the interview, not substituted for the upload. Repair: keep before/at and portal/reply separate.
Original practical text:
Equipment message: Your tripod is held at the loan desk until 16:00 today. If you cannot collect it, use the reservation page to cancel. After 16:00 an uncollected tripod may be offered to the waiting list.
Reading cue: Use the word’s role in this situation.
Question: What does “held” mean in this message? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Held describes temporary reservation at the desk. The later waiting-list action is conditional on noncollection. Repair: use the surrounding collection and deadline information to infer the word’s local meaning.
Original practical text:
Automatic message: We received your lost-property report. To add a description or photograph, open the report in your account and choose Update. Replies to this message are not monitored. We will contact you if an item matches your report.
Reading cue: Separate acknowledgment, update channel and possible later outcome.
Question: What should the recipient do to add a photograph? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The named update channel is the account. Not monitored explains why replying is ineffective; receipt of a report is not confirmation of a matched item. Repair: distinguish acknowledgment from a completed outcome.
Original practical text:
Service notice: From Monday, standard parcel collections move to Counter B. Parcels requiring a signature must still be collected from the staffed Counter A. Collection codes remain valid.
Reading cue: Read the general change together with the exception.
Question: Where should a signature-required parcel be collected on Monday? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The signature condition preserves Counter A despite the general move to B. Codes remain valid, so no replacement-code requirement is stated. Repair: apply the exception after the general date rule.
Original practical text:
Room message: Groups with at least six members may request the large meeting room. Send the group size and preferred date to the coordinator. Requests are reviewed against existing bookings; wait for a confirmation before announcing the room to participants.
Reading cue: Separate a request condition from an approved arrangement.
Question: A group has eight members. What does the message establish? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Eight meets the stated request condition, but availability review and confirmation remain. Repair: distinguish eligibility to ask from permission to treat the arrangement as settled.
Original practical text:
Email to the exhibition office: I booked the 13:00 guided visit but my train now arrives later. Could I join the 15:00 group instead? I can keep the original date if that helps. Please let me know whether a place is available.
Reading cue: Notice whether the writer requests or confirms.
Question: Why is the writer sending this email? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Could I and whether a place is available mark a request, not a confirmation. The date can stay the same. Repair: identify whose decision is still needed before treating the proposal as approved.
Original practical text:
Earlier message: The print demonstration starts at 12:00 in Studio 3. Bring your student card; paper is supplied. Later message: The demonstration will now use Studio 5. The time and preparation instructions are unchanged.
Reading cue: Track a partial update without discarding unchanged instructions.
Question: Which arrangement follows both messages? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The later message changes only the studio and explicitly retains time and preparation. Repair: replace the specified detail, not every detail in the earlier message.
Original practical text:
Shop notice: Online orders marked Ready may be collected from the side desk during shop hours. Bring the order code. A separate email will explain any collection fee that applies to your order.
Reading cue: Keep an unstated policy separate from an explicit instruction.
Question: Which statement is supported? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Ready and the code are stated conditions. Fee information is deferred, so the notice does not establish a universal free policy or a fee amount. Repair: leave an unstated detail unknown rather than borrow a familiar policy.
Read fresh everyday texts without the cue
- Twenty independent texts include invitations, collection instructions, membership replies, service changes and project messages. Decide from each complete text before checking the feedback. Every question carries its own source; old worked-case facts are not needed to solve it.
- After an error, name the distinction you missed: purpose/detail, old/new, general/exception, request/confirmation or permitted action/channel. Then try a fresh text. Repeating the same answer after seeing feedback repairs that item; it is not a second independent success.
Original practical text:
Community studio update: The open workshop on Sunday will begin at 14:00 rather than 13:00 while staff finish setting up. The location and end time are unchanged. People already registered do not need to book again; the register has been carried forward.
Question: What is the update mainly intended to do? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The first sentence changes the start; location, end and registration remain. Cancellation and rebooking are not stated. Repair: write a one-line summary of the actual change before checking options.
Original practical text:
Reservation message: Your desk is reserved from 09:30. Check in at reception before going upstairs. The building opens at 08:00, but this does not extend an individual reservation. If you expect to arrive after 09:45, contact reception to discuss whether it can still be held.
Question: What should the recipient do before going upstairs? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The message directly requires reception check-in. Building opening is a different clock, and a later arrival requires discussion rather than an automatic extension. Repair: identify the requested sequence before reasoning from nearby times.
Original practical text:
Return instructions: Bring ordinary costumes to the wardrobe office by Friday. Beaded or hand-painted pieces go to the specialist table on Thursday so staff can inspect them. Do not leave those pieces in the general return box, even if the box is open later.
Question: How should a hand-painted costume be returned? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Hand-painted pieces fall under the specialist condition, which supplies both place and day. The open box does not cancel that restriction. Repair: match the item category before choosing the general return procedure.
Original practical text:
Workshop email: Thanks for offering to bring a camera for our walk. We can provide one if you do not have your own. Please bring a charged phone so we can send route updates. A phone is not being requested as a replacement for the camera activity.
Question: Which item are participants asked to bring? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The charged phone is explicitly requested. A camera can be provided, and the final sentence separates the phone’s update role from the camera activity. Repair: distinguish a required item from an optional personally owned one.
Original practical text:
Invitation: The neighbourhood archive is opening its new reading room on Saturday. Drop in between 10:00 and 12:00 to see the space and meet volunteers. This is not a document-research session; regular research appointments resume next week. No booking is needed for the opening.
Question: What is the event mainly for? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The invitation offers a look at the space and a chance to meet volunteers, while excluding research sessions that day. Repair: keep the event’s purpose separate from the service that resumes later.
Original practical text:
Collection message: Your repaired lamp is ready at our north-branch desk. You may nominate another person to collect it by adding their name in your repair account. They must bring the repair reference. A forwarded copy of this message alone does not register a nominee.
Question: How can someone else be authorised to collect the lamp? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Nomination happens in the account. The reference is also needed at collection, and forwarding alone is expressly insufficient. Repair: separate authorisation from the document used to identify the repair.
Original practical text:
Room-booking reply: I can offer the small hall on 12 May, but the larger hall is already booked. If the small hall suits you, reply by tomorrow afternoon. I will then send a confirmation. Please do not print a venue on your invitations until you receive that confirmation.
Question: What is the current status of the small hall? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Can offer and if it suits you leave a choice and confirmation pending. The larger hall’s existing booking does not make the small hall unavailable. Repair: identify the step the writer says will happen next.
Original practical text:
Café notice: The terrace is closed while its floor is repaired. Indoor seating and takeaway service continue. Customers collecting an online order should use the indoor counter, not the terrace door. The notice does not change the collection times shown in individual orders.
Question: Where should an online order be collected? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The notice directly names the indoor counter, while indoor and takeaway services continue. The closure applies to the terrace, not the whole café. Repair: attach the closure to the exact area named.
Original practical text:
Message to the club secretary: Thank you for sending the draft timetable. I can lead the first session but not the second, because it overlaps with my class. Could another volunteer cover the second session? I am not asking to move the whole programme to a different day.
Question: What help is the writer requesting? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The writer retains the first session and asks for cover only for the second. The last sentence explicitly rules out moving the whole programme. Repair: trace which part of the arrangement the request changes.
Original practical text:
Earlier notice: Orientation begins at 09:00 in Hall A. Bring your pass and a notebook. Update: Please use Hall C for orientation. We will begin at 09:30 to allow time for the room change. You should still bring the items listed in the earlier notice.
Question: Which arrangement follows the update? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The update changes room and start while explicitly preserving the earlier items. Repair: mark changed and retained fields separately rather than treating the latest message as an entirely new instruction set.
Original practical text:
Membership message: Your application has been received. We still need proof of address before we can approve it. Upload the document using the secure link in your account. The temporary application number is for enquiries; it is not a membership card and does not permit entry.
Question: What does the temporary number allow? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The number is explicitly for enquiries, and the message denies membership-card or entry status. Proof remains pending. Repair: distinguish receipt, identification and approval rather than treating them as the same step.
Original practical text:
Volunteer notice: People who completed the safety briefing may request a tool-store shift. Send your preferred day to the coordinator. A shift is assigned only after you receive a reply confirming it; training completion does not guarantee your first-choice day.
Question: A trained volunteer sends a preferred day. What can be concluded? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Training permits the request; the confirming reply assigns the shift. The notice expressly rejects a first-choice guarantee and says nothing about repeated training. Repair: separate eligibility from allocation.
Original practical text:
Poster: The community repair desk offers free checks on Saturday morning. If an item needs replacement parts, staff will discuss the price with you before any paid work begins. You may decline that work after the check. The desk does not promise that every item can be repaired.
Question: Which service is described as free? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Free modifies the check. Parts and paid work require a price discussion, and repair success is not guaranteed. Repair: identify what the price word applies to before extending it to the whole service.
Original practical text:
Storage message: Your bicycle may remain in the temporary rack until Friday evening. Please remove it before the rack is dismantled on Saturday morning. We cannot move bicycles into the locked store for owners. Contact the office if you need directions to another public rack.
Question: What is the owner being asked to do? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The permission ends Friday evening and staff cannot provide the assumed move. Directions to another rack are not a storage guarantee. Repair: distinguish the deadline from the later consequence and optional information service.
Original practical text:
Coach’s message: The outdoor practice is cancelled because the field is flooded. We will meet at the usual time for an indoor planning session instead. Bring your notebook; you will not need outdoor equipment. Please do not travel to the field first.
Question: What has changed? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Outdoor practice is replaced by indoor planning at the usual time. The final instruction rules out going to the field first. Repair: separate the cancelled activity from the replacement meeting.
Original practical text:
Building notice: The main entrance is closed after 18:00. Residents with an access card may use the east entrance after that time. Visitors must arrange an escort with their host; a resident’s card does not give an unescorted visitor permission to enter.
Question: How should a visitor plan to enter after 18:00? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The visitor procedure is an escort arrangement. The card condition belongs to residents and is explicitly not transferred to unescorted visitors. Repair: match the rule to the person before choosing an entrance.
Original practical text:
Email from a tutor: I have read your outline. Please narrow the project to one neighbourhood and explain why you chose it. You do not need to collect more interviews for this revision. Send the revised outline by Tuesday so we can discuss the scope before you begin the next stage.
Question: What revision does the tutor request? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The requested changes concern area and rationale, not additional interviews. The purpose is to discuss scope before the next stage. Repair: identify the verbs that name the current revision rather than inventing a larger task.
Original practical text:
Collection notice: Items labelled On hold are being kept for a named borrower. That borrower has until 17:00 to collect them. Uncollected items may then become available to others. A label saying On hold is not an invitation for any visitor to take the item.
Question: What does On hold mean here? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The named borrower and collection deadline establish temporary reservation. The later availability is conditional, not current permission for anyone. Repair: infer the phrase from the surrounding procedure.
Original practical text:
Event message: We have received your accessibility request for the exhibition tour. Staff will contact you to discuss suitable arrangements. Your tour booking is unchanged. This acknowledgment does not yet confirm a particular arrangement; please wait for the staff reply before making plans that depend on it.
Question: What is confirmed by this message? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The acknowledgment confirms receipt and preserves the booking, while explicitly leaving the arrangement undecided. Repair: keep a confirmed booking separate from a pending accommodation decision.
Original practical text:
Music-room update: During exam week, evening practice sessions require advance booking. Daytime sessions continue on the usual drop-in basis. If a booked evening session is no longer needed, cancel it through your account so another user can reserve it. The message states no rule for weeks after exam week.
Question: Which rule is supported? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The rule is limited by both time of day and exam week. Daytime remains drop-in, and cancellation uses the account. Repair: preserve each scope condition and leave later weeks unspecified.
Read a request and its reply together
- Three transfer checks share one reading-group request and the coordinator’s reply. Track the proposed room, what the reply offers, the drink condition and the confirmation still needed. Nine people fitting within ten places does not by itself create a confirmed booking.
- The pair is one shared source context with three decisions, not three independent passages. Check each stem against both messages where needed. The sender’s original preference does not override the condition in the reply.
Original practical text:
Request from Leila: Could our reading group use the large room on Thursday evening? There will be nine of us. We would like to bring our own books and a hot-drink flask.
Coordinator’s reply: The large room is already booked. I can offer the small room, which has space for ten people, at the same time. Books are fine; drinks need closed lids. Reply by noon tomorrow if you want the small room, and I will send the confirmation. Please wait for that confirmation before telling the group the room is settled.
Question: What alternative is offered? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The reply preserves the requested time while offering a different room. The large room remains booked by someone else. Repair: identify the alternative without changing details the reply retains.
Question: What must happen before Leila treats the room as settled? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Capacity makes the offered room suitable in size, but the reply still requires acceptance and a confirming message. Repair: do not turn eligibility or an offer into a completed booking.
Question: Which drink arrangement matches the reply? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The reply permits drinks with closed lids and allows books. The request does not override the coordinator’s condition. Repair: apply the response’s condition to the offered arrangement.
Repair a practical misunderstanding with evidence
- The private response asks you to correct a reader who confuses induction with a booked shift and chooses an unsupported action channel. Draft a short explanation before viewing the model: identify the mistake, the required action and the confirmation still pending.
- Compare your repair with the checklist and revise one missing distinction. Different concise wording can work. This private explanation is self-review; it is not an automatically graded TOEFL writing task or a proficiency score.
Original notice: Completed induction lets a volunteer request a weekend shift. Send the preferred day through the volunteer account. The coordinator checks capacity and sends a confirmation; induction alone does not assign a shift.
A reader says: “I completed induction, so my preferred shift is booked. I will reply to an old announcement to tell the coordinator.” Write a short evidence-based repair: what is wrong, what should the reader do, and what must they wait for?
Use explicit wording to repair eligibility-versus-confirmation and channel errors. Self-review is not an objective score or independent assessment.
Return later to a new condition and a pending change
- On another day, try the two review texts before reopening examples. One changes a collection procedure with an exception; the other keeps an existing arrangement while a request is reviewed. Preserve the current state until the text supplies evidence that it changed.
- Continue with academic-passage evidence, or revisit daily-life reading principles if conditions still get lost. Familiar topic knowledge cannot replace the source. Lesson accuracy and private self-review do not convert to an official TOEFL score.
Task description checked on 19 October 2026: ETS TOEFL iBT Reading. ETS identifies everyday short texts for main ideas, details and implied meaning. All new messages and examples here are originally authored local practice, separate from reserved assessment material; no adaptive ETS simulation or calibrated score is claimed.
Original practical text:
New notice: From Wednesday, camera loans are collected at the media counter. Cameras needing a battery check must first go to the technician’s desk. Return locations are unchanged.
Question: A camera needs a battery check on Wednesday. What comes first? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The battery condition creates a first step despite the general collection move. Returns are explicitly unchanged. Repair: trace the exception and sequence before applying the general location.
Original practical text:
New message: Your request to change the delivery day is being reviewed. The original day remains in place unless we send a change confirmation. You can add further information through your order page; replies to this update are not monitored.
Question: What should the customer assume while waiting? Choose ONE answer.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Review is not confirmation, and the message explicitly preserves the original arrangement until a confirming change. Repair: identify the current state and the evidence needed to change it.
