A useful situation
- Your goal: Use the sentence meaning and pronunciation to choose a character.
- Before you start, recall at / in在 location statements and again / then再 for again or then. These two characters share the same pronunciation in the examples, so the surrounding meaning must guide the choice.
Complete “I am at school”: 我___学校。Choose between 在, used for a location, and 再, again or then.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
在 introduces the location 学校. 再 does not express being at school in this sentence. Shared pronunciation does not make the written characters interchangeable.
Words you will use
- at / in在 zài — at / in. I / me我at / in在school学校。
- again / then再 zài — again / then. to ask请to say again再说one time (all the way…一遍。
- see见 jiàn — see. tomorrow明天see见。
- here这里 zhèlǐ — here. I / me我at / in在here这里。
- character字 zì — character. this这个character字how / why怎么to read out读?
Match each word with its meaning in this unit.

Use the example sentences to check each word’s meaning in context.
Build the meaning
- Characters with similar sounds can have different meanings: at / in在 zài locates something; again / then再 zài can mean again or then.
- To complete a message, check the whole sentence, the pinyin cue, and the role of the missing word. Guessing from sound alone is not enough.
Work through a decision: Compare I / me我at / in在school学校 with to ask请tomorrow明天again / then再to come来. In the first, school学校 is the place after the location word at / in在. In the second, tomorrow明天 sets tomorrow and again / then再to come来 asks someone to come again then. The shared sound alone cannot choose the character; identify what the missing word contributes to its whole sentence.
Compare a plausible mistake: The at / in在 in now现在 is part of the word meaning now, while goodbye再见 is the conventional farewell. Do not decide by matching one English gloss to every occurrence of the sound. For a new word, check the whole word and situation rather than replacing every occurrence of that sound with one character.
A correct pinyin sound does not guarantee the correct character. This authored practice is separate from the official sample with quarantined writing-key numbering.
Choose zài for location: 我____学校。

在 locates the speaker; 再 would mean again or then.
Complete “Please say it again”: 请___说一遍。说一遍 means say once. First decide whether the missing character locates a person or requests repetition.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
再 requests another saying. 请再说一遍 is the repetition request; 在 would not supply that meaning in this frame. Use the function of the phrase rather than the shared sound.
Listen for a fresh detail
- Listen before revealing the script.
- Replay if you need to. This is practice: if playback is unavailable, use the script as reading and return to listening on a device with Mandarin playback.

Lin An writes that she is at school and asks the reader to come again tomorrow, meeting at three in the afternoon. She checks the time and place before sending.
Which character in the message means “again”?

再 in 明天再来 means come again tomorrow.
Read both sentences and choose the characters that fit: 我___家。请下午___来。家 means home and 下午 afternoon.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
我在家 is a location statement. 请下午再来 requests another visit in the afternoon. 在 supplies location and 再 repetition; the shared sound alone does not select the written character.
Speak, write, and review
- Ask a partner how to read at / in在, then say a sentence with it. Explain in English how again / then再 differs.
- Record yourself privately or work with a partner. First try without the model, then compare the meaning and structure; a text checker cannot assess your pronunciation.
A: this这个character字how / why怎么to read out读? B: zài。 A: I / me我at / in在school学校。
- Write a two-line message giving your location and tomorrow’s meeting time. Check at / in在 and again / then再 carefully.
- Tomorrow, recall one location sentence and one repetition request without copying. Later, change the place and time and explain each character choice. Handwrite separately if practising form; these text checks do not assess stroke order.
Use the sentence meaning and pronunciation to choose a character. Use the examples as support, then try a fresh version. Completing these exercises records practice, not a guarantee of mastery.

Write a two-line message giving your location and tomorrow’s meeting time. Check 在 and 再 carefully.
Compare the meaning and structure with the checklist. Your own response may differ from the model.
Use Mandarin for the new sentences or dialogue. You may explain your reasoning in English. Write a new short message locating yourself somewhere and asking the reader to come again at a stated time. Use both 在 and 再. Read it aloud, then explain how the written context distinguishes the two characters despite the shared sound.
If the characters are swapped, identify the place phrase and the repetition request before rewriting. Read the revised message for meaning; a correct spoken syllable alone does not verify the written choice.
