One word may use two characters
-
person人 rén — person is one character. student学生 xuésheng — student is a two-character word.
-
Recognising a word, typing it, and handwriting it are separate skills. Practise the one you need without assuming the others are automatic.
-
Before you start: Recall that writing, pronunciation and meaning do different jobs. You can begin shape practice without fluent speech; recognising a shape does not establish handwriting skill.

Recognition and handwriting need different practice.
You recognise 学生 when it is shown. What can you safely conclude?

Recognising the shown word is evidence for that recognition task. It does not automatically establish handwriting recall or pronunciation.
Look for reusable parts
- mouth口 kǒu — mouth appears as a component in (yes/no ?)吗 ma, the question particle. A component may suggest a meaning area or a sound.
- archaic variant of 汝女 nǚ — woman appears in ma妈 mā — mother. The right-hand horse马 mǎ gives a sound clue, though its tone differs.
Which component is on the left in 妈?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
妈 contains 女 on the left and 马 on the right.
Write carefully, not endlessly
- Copy person人 and mouth口 slowly, looking at shape and proportion. Use a reliable stroke-order model if practising handwriting.
- Then cover the model and try once from memory. Compare and correct the part you missed.
archaic variant of 汝女 + horse马 gives ma妈 in this character. That is a component analysis, not a claim that every character can be guessed from its parts.
Work through a decision: In ma妈, locate archaic variant of 汝女 on the left and horse马 on the right. The right component gives a sound clue, yet mǎ and mā have different tones. Use the component to focus attention, then check the learned word; do not replace that word’s reading with the component’s reading.
Compare a near miss: A component clue is not a guaranteed pronunciation or a historical story. Likewise, person人 and to enter入 need attention to stroke shape and where the strokes meet; a familiar overall outline is not enough to distinguish them.
For the paper task, open the person人 stroke model and the to enter入 stroke model. These selected models support shape comparison; their list levels do not change this beginner task.
Written-character practice: 妈 is mā and its right component 马 is mǎ. What does that comparison show?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
The letters m and a are shared while the tones differ. That supports a sound clue here, not a rule that every component fully determines reading or meaning.
Notice similar characters
- person人 rén — person and to enter入 rù — enter look similar. Look at where the strokes meet rather than guessing from overall shape.
- Learn a character inside a word or phrase. entrance入口 rùkǒu — entrance gives to enter入 and mouth口 a useful context.
A memorable story about a character is a memory aid unless supported as historical etymology. Components are clues, not guaranteed definitions.
Complete 入口 by writing its second character: 入____。

Fresh sign check: a doorway sign is written 人口 instead of the intended 入口, entrance. Which repair fits?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
入口 needs 入 followed by 口. 人口 is a different word, commonly population. Changing the first character repairs this intended sign; similarity of outline does not make the words interchangeable.
Recognise, recall, use
- Find person人, mouth口, and ma妈 on this page. Close it, recall one, and check the model.
- Next: type your first sentences.
Learn whole words, notice recurring components, and separate recognition from typing and handwriting.
Later recall: Tomorrow, distinguish person人 from to enter入 in a different order and recall entrance入口 after covering the model. A few days later, explain what the horse马 component does and does not tell you about ma妈. Revisit the specific shape or sound clue that you confused rather than copying a whole page.
On paper, write 人 and 入 once while looking at reliable models, cover them and recall each once. Reopen the models and compare the shapes. Then write the Mandarin word for entrance from memory. In the response box, type that word and note one specific shape or recall point to revisit. Typing the word does not automatically judge your paper handwriting.
Comparison records a self-review only. It does not establish pronunciation, handwriting or general proficiency.
