Countable and uncountable nouns
הוצגהמיקום המנוהל נשמר בדפדפן הזה. המשך אינו משלים את השיעור או עונה על שאלותיו.
Two kinds of nouns

- Countable nouns can be counted: one book, two books.
- In an uncountable use, a noun describes a substance or general idea, not separate items: water, music, money. The diagram shows these everyday meanings.
- This changes which words we use with them.
Your goal: choose a quantity phrase from the noun's meaning, then repair a practical message. Start with articles and A1 singular/plural noun phrases.
I have some homework and much optimism.
Countable vs uncountable
- Countable: a / an + singular, or a number + plural → a car, three cars.
- Uncountable use: no a / an or plural ending for the substance → some water. At a café, two waters can mean two servings or bottles. Count the meaning in context; do not mark a serving use wrong just because the substance is uncountable.
- Uncountable nouns take a singular verb: The news is good.
Sort the nouns — countable or uncountable?
Distinguish separate items from substances or ideas in the meanings shown.
Which phrase is correct?
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Some water describes an amount of the substance. Many needs a countable plural, so many water does not fit. For a number, name the unit: two bottles of water. Serving uses such as two waters can also be correct in a café.
some / any
- Some can introduce an unspecified number or amount: There are some eggs. It does not tell us exactly how many or always mean a small amount.
- any is common in negatives and open questions: There isn't any milk. Any questions?
- Use some in a common offer: Would you like some tea? It can also appear in a request: Could I have some tea? A positive sentence can use free-choice any: Choose any cup you like.
Choose the option that fits: There is not ___ milk left in the fridge.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today

Translate into English, keeping the amount unspecified: 我需要一些水。
Difficulty 3/5 · 200 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
I need some water is one natural model. I need water can also keep the amount unspecified. A water or two waters can count servings in another context; that is a meaning choice, not a rule banning every count use of water.
much / many / a lot of
- many + countable plural: many people.
- much + uncountable (mostly negatives / questions): much time.
- A lot of works with both: a lot of friends, a lot of time. It is common in everyday positive statements, not always the only or best choice. Many people agree is also standard; much work remains can sound more formal. Too much noise is natural in a positive sentence too.
Choose the correct word: There are ___ people here.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
“people” is countable plural → use “many”.
Common mistakes
- For ordinary messages, use some information / homework / advice, not informations / homeworks / advices. To count separate items, use a phrase such as two pieces of advice or three homework tasks.
- For an amount of bread as food, ask for some bread, a slice of bread or a loaf of bread, depending on what you need. Different breads can name varieties; do not treat every possible count use as an error.
- ❌ How much apples? → ✓ How many apples? — countable → many.
Match each unit to the serving described in brackets.

- some is common in positive statements and offers; any is common in negatives and open questions. Choose from the meaning, not just the sentence's question mark. Any seat is fine offers free choice; some seats are wet gives an unspecified group.
- many + countable, much + uncountable, a lot of + both.
