Meeting people is a dance with fixed steps: greeting, names, a moment of small talk, and a clean goodbye.
见面是有固定舞步的舞：问候、姓名、一小段寒暄、干净的道别。
You already know this dance in Chinese. This topic teaches the English music: the same dance at three speeds, friend, classmate and teacher, and the few lines of fuel that keep it moving.
中文里你早会跳这支舞，这一课学它的英文配乐：朋友、同学、老师三种速度。
English greetings have a register dial, from relaxed to respectful. Turn it by person and place.
英文问候有语域旋钮，从随意到尊敬，按人和场合拧。
A friend takes Hi or Hey. A classmate takes a cheerful Morning. A teacher at the start of class takes Good morning, Ms Gao, and a first meeting in an office takes Hello, how do you do.
朋友用 Hi；同学用 Morning；上课对老师说 Good morning, Ms Gao；初次见面用 How do you do。
Hi and Hello work almost everywhere; the titles do the respecting, so keep them with family names only, and never mix the two ends of the dial: Yo, Mr Chen is two speeds at once.
Hi 和 Hello 几乎万能，尊敬交给称呼：只配姓氏，绝不混搭两个极端。
This is speaking now, so your name leaves your mouth. Offer it whole, then say which name to use: I'm Lin Xiaoyu, please call me Xiaoyu. Ask back with And you, or What is your name, and when you introduce someone else, use This is: this is my friend Wei.
这次轮到你开口：完整报出名字，再说明对方该怎么称呼你：I'm Lin Xiaoyu. Please call me Xiaoyu.；用 And you? 或 What is your name? 接回去；介绍别人用 This is my friend Wei。
The exchange is a small circle: your name, their name, one return.
一个小圆圈：你的名字、对方的名字、一次回问。
Small talk is friendly fuel, not information, and at A1 you need exactly four pairs. How are you, fine thanks, and you. Nice day today, yes very sunny. Is this your first year here, yes it is, everything is new. Do you like the class, yes, the teacher is funny. The rule of the fuel: answer with one or two words plus one extra piece. Fine alone puts out the fire; And you returns the ball every time.
寒暄是燃料不是信息，A1 只需四组：How are you 配 Fine, thanks. And you?；Nice day today 配 Yes, very sunny。 规则：答一两词再加一小块；光说 Fine 火就灭了，And you? 每次都把球打回去。
Endings are steps of the dance too. See you tomorrow, or see you in class, when you are sure to meet again. Goodbye, have a good weekend, polite at any register. And Bye, or bye-bye, for friends only. Say them with a falling voice: the goodbye closes the music, and the falling note tells the other person the dance is over.
道别也是舞步：确定再见用 See you tomorrow；任何场合礼貌用 Goodbye, have a good weekend；朋友之间用 Bye。 用降调收尾，告诉对方这支舞到此为止。
Watch out for three traps. First, do not answer with one word and stop: Fine is a full stop, but Fine, thanks, and you is a conversation. Second, do not translate 你好 word by word: hello is one word, and You good is not English. Third, titles travel with family names only: Ms Gao, never Ms Xiaoyu.
三个陷阱：只答一个词（Fine 是句号，Fine, thanks. And you? 才是对话）；把你好直译成 You good（hello 是一个词）；称呼配名不配姓（是 Ms Gao 不是 Ms Xiaoyu——中文习惯正好相反，要留意）。
Check yourself. Greet your teacher at nine in the morning, and your friend at lunch. Offer your name and ask back, out loud, twice. Reply to Nice day today with two pieces. And leave politely, knowing you will meet in class tomorrow. If the four steps come without pausing, the dance is yours.
自测：早上九点向老师问好、午餐向朋友问好；大声报名字并回问两次；用两块燃料回应 Nice day today；知道明天课上再见时礼貌道别。 四步不卡，这支舞就是你的了。
