A useful situation

• Your goal: Recount events and distinguish sequence from cause.
• Before you start, recall time words and familiar actions. first先xiān, then然后ránhòu and finally最后zuìhòu organise a sequence; a repeated event and a request to repeat an action have different contexts.

Words you will use

• first先xiān xiān — first. I / me我wǒfirst先xiānto go去qùschool学校xué xiào。
• then然后ránhòu ránhòu — then. then然后ránhòuto go去qùlibrary图书馆tú shū guǎn。
• finally最后zuìhòu zuìhòu — finally. finally最后zuìhòuto return home回家huí jiā。
• again, repeated event又yòu yòu — again, repeated event. he / him他tāagain, repeated event又yòuto arrive late迟到chí dào(completed / change)了le。
• again, subsequent action再zài zài — again, subsequent action. to ask请qǐngto say again再说zài shuōfirst一次yī cì。

Build the meaning

• first先xiān……then然后ránhòu……finally最后zuìhòu…… makes an event sequence clear. It does not by itself explain why one event caused another.
• again, repeated event又yòu often refers to a repeated event that has occurred; again, subsequent action再zài can refer to doing something again afterwards. Compare he / him他tāagain, repeated event又yòuto come来lái(completed / change)了le and to ask请qǐngagain, subsequent action再zàito come来láifirst一次yī cì.

Work through a decision: For yesterday昨天zuó tiānI / me我wǒfirst先xiānto buy买mǎibook书shū，then然后ránhòuto go去qùto see看kànfriend朋友péng yǒu，finally最后zuìhòuto return home回家huí jiā — yesterday I first bought books, then visited a friend and finally went home — list the three events in that order. Asked why the friend visit happened, leave the reason unknown unless another sentence supplies it. An ordered account is not automatically a causal explanation.

Compare a plausible mistake: he / him他tāagain, repeated event又yòuto come来lái(completed / change)了le reports another arrival in that context; to ask请qǐngagain, subsequent action再zàito come来láifirst一次yī cì asks for another visit. These examples differ in event status, not just their English word again. Other constructions need their own context; do not force one past/future rule onto every again, repeated event又yòu or again, subsequent action再zài.

• The reading and listening have different details. Use the material for the question you are answering.
• Read once for the situation, then again for the relevant detail. Reveal help when needed.

Speak, write, and review

• Tell a partner a three-event day. They retell it in the same order and ask about one detail.
• Record yourself privately or work with a partner. First try without the model, then compare the meaning and structure; a text checker cannot assess your pronunciation.

• Write a three-event story, then a sentence about a planned repeat.
• Tomorrow, recall an ordered account and explain what it does not say about cause. Later, change a reported repeat into a request for another occasion and explain the change in event status.
