弥补 · míbǔ
to make up for a loss, gap or shortcoming
弥补 commonly goes with gaps, shortcomings or losses, as in 弥补不足 (make up for shortcomings). It describes compensation or filling a gap, rather than simply increasing something.
额外的练习可以弥补基础知识的不足。
