补

补 · bǔ

mend; make up something missing

Study these uses in context

Your goal: Distinguish repairing a physical gap from making up a missed amount or activity.

Before you start: Recognise 洞 for hole, 课 for class and 请假 for taking leave.

mend or patch

The hole is the physical defect being repaired. 补 identifies restoring the damaged area.

Tā bǎ yīfu shàng de dòng bǔ hǎo le.

She mended the hole in the garment.

make up something missed

The lessons missed during leave are the gap. 补 does not describe repairing a classroom building.

Wǒ xiǎng bǔ shàng qǐngjià shí làxià de kè.

I want to catch up on the lessons I missed while on leave.

Compare: A torn garment has a physical hole; missed lessons create a gap in learning. The object of 补 identifies what is missing. 补课 can also refer to extra tuition, so it does not always prove absence. 补钱 concerns paying an additional shortfall; identify the missing amount from the situation rather than translating every 补 as repair.

Try with a clue: 这件衣服破了,需要补一下。破了 means torn. What is being restored? Is this extra tuition?

Check your reasoning

The torn garment needs mending. 衣服 and 破了 establish the physical-repair use; no class or tuition is mentioned.

Try a fresh context: 票价是八十元,你只付了六十元,还要补二十元。What does 补 require here, and why is the amount twenty rather than eighty?

Check your reasoning

An additional payment of twenty yuan is needed to cover the shortfall. Sixty has already been paid toward an eighty-yuan fare; 补 refers to the missing balance.

Use it in a new situation: Write one sentence about mending a garment and another about catching up on a missed class. Then explain why 我要补课 alone does not prove that you were absent yesterday.

Check your reasoning

I need to mend the hole in the garment. I need to catch up on yesterday's missed lesson. 我要补课 can also mean taking extra tuition; yesterday's absence requires further context.

Recall later: Tomorrow, explain the gap in 补衣服, 补课 and 补钱. A few days later, make a fresh context for each and check that your interpretation follows the stated object and facts.

These are selected reading and usage activities. Compare your reasoning before rating recall below; no automatic usage or pronunciation score is awarded.
