Use 记录 when recording information or events. 纪录 commonly refers to the best result achieved in an activity, as in 打破纪录 (break a record); the two words sound the same.

Here 纪录 means an achievement record, as in a swimming record. 记录 commonly means recording information or events. 纪录片 means documentary.
