especially格外 (especially / exceptionally)
An especially bright moon
- At the Mid-Autumn Festival you look up and the moon is brighter than you've ever seen.
- tonight今晚(modifier / structural particle)的the moon月亮especially格外circle圆,especially格外bright亮。 – "Tonight the moon is especially round and especially bright."
especially格外 + Adj / feeling verb
- especially格外 = "especially, exceptionally": more than usual, compared with other times or things.
- It goes before the adjective, like unusual特别: especially格外happy高兴, especially格外to be careful小心.
rain雨after后的the air空气especially格外fresh清新。

Compared with usual
- the first time第一次to depart离开home家,he / him他especially格外to miss想念mama妈妈。 – "Away from home for the first time, he missed his mum especially."
- to snow下雪(completed / change)了,to drive a car开车want / will / need要especially格外to be careful小心。 – "It's snowing; drive extra carefully."
snow下雪了,driving开车must要extra格外careful小心。
No degree / adjective linker很, a standard to compare with
- Do not add degree / adjective linker很 or very非常: especially格外happy高兴, not especially格外degree / adjective linker很happy高兴.
- especially格外 implies "more than usual"; it sounds odd when nothing is being compared.
especially格外 versus unusual特别 and very非常
- very非常 = very (no comparison needed): very非常good好.
- unusual特别 and especially格外 both stress "more than usual"; especially格外 is a little more literary.
he他today今天especially特别happy高兴。
Recap
- especially格外 + Adj / feeling verb = especially, exceptionally (more than usual).
- No degree / adjective linker很; close to unusual特别, more literary.
Practise this pattern step by step.
Practice without the models
Choose a pattern, cover its teaching examples, and attempt its questions. Use the labels to find feedback in the separate key.
especially格外 (especially / exceptionally)
1601.1 Complete: “After the rain the air is especially fresh.” (literary) to rain雨back后(modifier / structural particle)的air空气…………fresh and clean清新。

- A. today今天cold冷especially格外。
- B. today今天especially格外cold冷。
- C. especially格外today今天degree / adjective linker很cold冷。

1601.4 especially格外 is close in meaning to unusual特别.
True or false? Explain or repair the statement.
1601.5 At the Mid-Autumn Festival you look up and the moon is brighter than you've ever seen. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.
Write or say your own response before reading the key.
A fresh situation
R1. Interpret and repair. A note says today今天especially格外quiet安静. A learner assumes the place is always quieter than every other place. Limit the claim.
R2. Use it yourself. Explain why today's park seems exceptionally quiet in a stated situation.
Write your responses before opening the key. Compare meaning as well as form; a different valid answer need not copy the model.

Answers and explanations
Check after your attempt. For open tasks, compare the message and the stated criteria, then revise one detail.
especially格外 (especially / exceptionally)
1601.1 especially格外
especially格外 + Adj = more than usual.
1601.2 B. today今天especially格外cold冷。
today今天especially格外cold冷 is right: especially格外 ("especially") is a degree adverb, so it replaces degree / adjective linker很 and goes before a bare adjective.
1601.3 to snow下雪(completed / change)了,to drive a car开车want / will / need要especially格外to be careful小心。
want / will / need要 + especially格外 + Adj.
1601.4 True.
Both stress “more than usual”.
1601.5 One possible response: tonight今晚(modifier / structural particle)的the moon月亮especially格外circle圆,especially格外bright亮。
Check meaning and form:
- My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
- I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
- Do not add degree / adjective linker很 or very非常: especially格外happy高兴, not especially格外degree / adjective linker很happy高兴.
- especially格外 implies "more than usual"; it sounds odd when nothing is being compared.
- I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
Fresh-situation answers
R1. It says today is especially quiet relative to a relevant usual level or comparison. It neither describes every day nor ranks all places.
R2. One possible response. today今天to come来(modifier / structural particle)的person人很少,park (for public recreation)公园especially格外quiet安静。The low attendance supplies a context for the unusual quietness. Do not infer a universal causal rule from this one observation.
Recall later. Tomorrow, supply a comparison context for a different especially格外 description.
