Practise this pattern step by step.

Practice without the models

Choose a pattern, cover its teaching examples, and attempt its questions. Use the labels to find feedback in the separate key.

1301.4 opposite相反xiāng fǎn can open a sentence followed by a comma.

True or false? Explain or repair the statement.

1301.5 You tried to help your little brother with maths, but he got more confused. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.

Write or say your own response before reading the key.

A fresh situation

R1. Interpret and repair. A team expected a delay to harm the result, but extra time improved it. A learner uses on the contrary反而fǎn ér merely to add an unrelated second fact. What relation is needed?

R2. Use it yourself. Describe an expected difficulty that instead helped your understanding.

Write your responses before opening the key. Compare meaning as well as form; a different valid answer need not copy the model.

Answers and explanations

Check after your attempt. For open tasks, compare the message and the stated criteria, then revise one detail.

on the contrary反而fǎn ér (on the contrary / instead)

1301.1 on the contrary反而fǎn ér

on the contrary反而fǎn ér marks the opposite of what you'd expect.

1301.2 C. he / him他tānot only (... but also ...)不但bù dàn没哭méi kū,on the contrary反而fǎn érto laugh笑xiào(completed / change)了le。

not only (... but also ...)不但bù dànnot / haven't没méi…,on the contrary反而fǎn ér… with on the contrary反而fǎn ér after the (omitted) subject.

1301.3 he / him他tānot only (... but also ...)不但bù dàn没生气méi shēng qì,on the contrary反而fǎn érto laugh笑xiào(completed / change)了le。

not only (... but also ...)不但bù dànnot / haven't没méi…,on the contrary反而fǎn ér….

1301.4 True.

True. opposite相反xiāng fǎn can open a sentence, followed by a comma, to mean “on the contrary”: he / him他tā没生气méi shēng qì,opposite相反xiāng fǎn,he / him他tādegree / adjective linker很hěnhappy高兴gāo xìng.

1301.5 One possible response: I / me我wǒexplanation解释jiě shì(completed / change)了lehalf of the day半天bàn tiān,he / him他tāon the contrary反而fǎn érmore更gèngmuddled糊涂hú tú(completed / change)了le。

Check meaning and form:

  • My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
  • I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
  • on the contrary反而fǎn ér is an adverb: (literary) to rain雨yǔon the contrary反而fǎn ér更大gèng dà(completed / change)了le, not on the contrary反而fǎn ér(literary) to rain雨yǔmore更gèngsee 大夫大dà(completed / change)了le.
  • It needs an expectation to go against; for a plain contrast use but但是dàn shì / but却què.
  • I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.

This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.

Fresh-situation answers

R1. on the contrary反而fǎn ér marks an outcome opposite to an expectation. State the expectation or make it recoverable: although虽然suī ránevening晚wǎn(completed / change)了le一天yī tiān,outcome结果jié guǒon the contrary反而fǎn ér更好gèng hǎo. An unrelated addition needs another connector.

R2. One possible response. I / me我wǒto think (i.e. to take it…以为yǐ wéi这道题zhè dào tí太难tài nán,to discuss讨论tǎo lùnafter以后yǐ hòuon the contrary反而fǎn érmore更gèngclear明白míng bái(completed / change)了le。The reverse outcome concerns understanding after discussion; it does not establish that all difficult questions help everyone.

Recall later. Later, state an expectation before composing a fresh on the contrary反而fǎn ér result.
