Adverbs with adjectives
Printable paper with separate answer pages Step-by-step lessons
Original teaching practice. Read one pattern, cover its model and try the questions before checking the separate answer section. Examples adapted from Chinese Grammar Wiki (AllSet Learning, CC BY-NC-SA) retain the course-reference provenance.
straight挺 + Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 (quite / rather)
How's the new flat?
- A friend asks about your new apartment. It is nice, though not amazing.
- straight挺good好(modifier / structural particle)的,exactly就是away from离company公司slightly有点儿to distance oneself from…远。 – "It's pretty nice – just a bit far from the office."
straight挺 + Adjective + (modifier / structural particle)的
- straight挺 + Adj (+ (modifier / structural particle)的) = "quite, pretty, rather" in casual speech: straight挺good好(modifier / structural particle)的, 挺贵(modifier / structural particle)的, 挺忙(modifier / structural particle)的.
- (modifier / structural particle)的 at the end is common and makes it sound natural and relaxed.
this这(measure word)家shop店的things东西quite挺expensive贵的。

Feelings and verbs
- Feeling verbs take straight挺 too: I / me我straight挺to like喜欢this这个city城市(modifier / structural particle)的。 – "I quite like this city."
- he / him他挺会to speak说话(modifier / structural particle)的。 – "He's pretty good with words."
I我quite挺like喜欢this这个city城市的。
Negative and register
- "Not very" is 不太 or not very不怎么, not 不挺: not so good不太好, not not不straight挺good好. (挺不错 / straight挺no good不好 put not不 after straight挺.)
- straight挺 is spoken; in an essay prefer fairly / rather比较 or degree / adjective linker很.
straight挺 versus degree / adjective linker很 and too太
- degree / adjective linker很 + Adj is the neutral default: degree / adjective linker很good好.
- straight挺 is friendly and casual; too太…(completed / change)了 is stronger and often "too": 太贵(completed / change)了!
too太expensive贵了!
Recap
- straight挺 + Adj / feeling verb + (modifier / structural particle)的 = quite, pretty (casual).
- "Not very" = 不太; in writing use fairly / rather比较 or degree / adjective linker很.
Practise this pattern step by step.
Practice without the models
Choose a pattern, cover its teaching examples, and attempt its questions. Use the labels to find feedback in the separate key.
straight挺 + Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 (quite / rather)
0301.1 Casually: “The food here is pretty good.” here这儿(modifier / structural particle)的vegetable菜…………to be fond of eating好吃(modifier / structural particle)的。
0301.2 Which says “It isn't very expensive”?
- A. 不挺太贵。
- B. 不挺贵(modifier / structural particle)的。
- C. not不太贵。
- D. straight挺not不太贵。
0301.3 Build: “I quite like this city.”
Arrange all chunks: I / me我 / straight挺to like喜欢 / (modifier / structural particle)的。 / this这个city城市
0301.4 straight挺 is more casual than degree / adjective linker很.
True or false? Explain or repair the statement.
0301.5 A friend asks about your new apartment. It is nice, though not amazing. Close the examples. Say a Mandarin response, then write it in Chinese. Explain briefly in English what the lesson’s pattern adds. Compare with the model, then change one detail and try again.
Write or say your own response before reading the key.
A fresh situation
R1. Interpret and repair. A casual description says this这个area地方不挺convenient方便. Repair the intended not very convenient meaning.
R2. Use it yourself. Give a positive but qualified opinion of a new room using straight挺.
Write your responses before opening the key. Compare meaning as well as form; a different valid answer need not copy the model.

Answers and explanations
Check after your attempt. For open tasks, compare the message and the stated criteria, then revise one detail.
straight挺 + Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的 (quite / rather)
0301.1 straight挺
straight挺 + Adj + (modifier / structural particle)的.
0301.2 C. not不太贵。
The negative of “quite” is 不太.
0301.3 I / me我straight挺to like喜欢this这个city城市(modifier / structural particle)的。
straight挺 + feeling verb + object + (modifier / structural particle)的.
0301.4 True.
straight挺 belongs to friendly conversation.
0301.5 One possible response: straight挺good好(modifier / structural particle)的,exactly就是away from离company公司slightly有点儿to distance oneself from…远。
Check meaning and form:
- My response conveys a message that fits the opening situation.
- I can explain the meaning of the pattern, rather than only naming it.
- I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.
This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.
Fresh-situation answers
R1. this这个area地方不太convenient方便 or this这个area地方not very不怎么convenient方便。不挺 is not the ordinary negation of straight挺convenient方便. straight挺not不convenient方便 is possible but means quite inconvenient, a different degree.
R2. One possible response. this这个room房间straight挺good好(modifier / structural particle)的,exactly就是slightly有点儿small小。The room is pretty good, with small size as a qualification. The final (modifier / structural particle)的 is common in this casual frame; alternatives depend on the adjective phrase.
Recall later. Later, compare straight挺convenient方便, 不太convenient方便 and straight挺not不convenient方便 without treating them as equal.
