original本来běn lái vs original原来yuán lái (originally vs it turns out)

Plan versus discovery

  • You planned to take the bus, then found out your friend had been driving there all along.
  • I / me我wǒoriginal本来běn láiwant / think / miss想xiǎngto sit坐zuòpublic transport vehicle公交车gōng jiāo chē,original原来yuán láiyou你nǐto drive a car开车kāi chēto come来lái(completed / change)了le! – "I was originally going to take the bus – oh, so you drove here!"

Both can mean "originally"

  • original本来běn lái / original原来yuán lái + earlier state: he / him他tāoriginal本来běn láito live住zhùat / in在zàiBeijing, capital of the…北京běi jīng = he / him他tāoriginal原来yuán láito live住zhùat / in在zàiBeijing, capital of the…北京běi jīng – "He originally lived in Beijing."
  • Before a noun with (modifier / structural particle)的de, both work: original本来běn lái(modifier / structural particle)的deplan计划jì huà / original原来yuán lái(modifier / structural particle)的deplan计划jì huà.

he他tāoriginally原来yuán láilived住zhùin在zàiBeijing北京Běi jīng。

本来: the plan · 原来: what you discover

Only original原来yuán lái: so it turns out

  • original原来yuán lái announces a discovery: original原来yuán láito be / is是shìyou你nǐ! – "Oh, it's you!"
  • original本来běn lái cannot do this: original本来běn láito be / is是shìyou你nǐ does not mean "so it's you".

so it turns out原来yuán láihe他tāis是shìa teacher老师lǎo shī。

Only original本来běn lái: of course

  • original本来běn láithen / just就jiù = naturally, should have been obvious: 这件zhè jiànmatter事shìoriginal本来běn láiexactly就是jiù shìyou你nǐ(modifier / structural particle)的demistake错cuò – "This was your fault from the start."
  • original原来yuán láithen / just就jiù does not carry this "of course" meaning.

Choose by job

  • Discovery → original原来yuán lái. Obvious from the start → original本来běn láithen / just就jiù. Original plan or state → either.
  • he / him他tāoriginal本来běn láiunexpectedly不想bù xiǎngto come来lái,afterwards后来hòu láifriend朋友péng yǒuto advise劝quàn(completed / change)了lehe / him他tā。 – "He didn't want to come at first, but then his friend persuaded him."

he他tāoriginally本来běn láinot不bùwant to想xiǎngcome来lái。

Recap

  • Originally: original本来běn lái or original原来yuán lái. So it turns out: only original原来yuán lái. Of course, naturally: only original本来běn lái(then / just就jiù).
  • Pick the word by the job it does in the sentence.

  • It needs no special condition.

I我wǒoften常常cháng chánggo to去qùthe library图书馆tú shū guǎn。

往往: tends to (a pattern)

usually往往wǎng wǎng = tends to (under a condition)

  • usually往往wǎng wǎng describes a regular pattern found under certain conditions: weekend周末zhōu mò(modifier / structural particle)的desupermarket (abbr. for 超级市场)超市chāo shìusually往往wǎng wǎngperson人rén很多hěn duō。 – "Supermarkets tend to be crowded at weekends."
  • The condition (time, situation) is usually stated.

at weekends周末zhōu mò的desupermarkets超市chāo shìtend to往往wǎng wǎngpeople人rénbe many很多hěn duō。

Where usually往往wǎng wǎng does not fit

  • usually往往wǎng wǎng is not for wishes or the future: after以后yǐ hòu我会wǒ huìoften常常cháng chángto come来lái, not after以后yǐ hòu我会wǒ huìusually往往wǎng wǎngto come来lái.
  • Without a condition, usually往往wǎng wǎng sounds unfinished: he / him他tāusually往往wǎng wǎngto arrive late迟到chí dào is weak; he / him他tā下雨天xià yǔ tiānusually往往wǎng wǎngto arrive late迟到chí dào works.

Side by side

  • usually往往wǎng wǎng is not for wishes or future plans.

he他tājust刚gāngcame to来láiBeijing北京Běi jīngtwo months两个月liǎng gè yuè。

刚 + verb: has just · 刚才: a moment ago

just now (variant of 刚才)刚才gāng cái is a time word

Check after your attempt. For open tasks, compare the message and the stated criteria, then revise one detail.

original本来běn lái vs original原来yuán lái (originally vs it turns out)

2701.1 original原来yuán lái

A discovery takes original原来yuán lái.

2701.2 A. original本来běn lái

original本来běn láithen / just就jiù = naturally, of course.

2701.3 1–B: original原来yuán láito be / is是shìthis way / so这样zhè yàng! = So that's how it is!; 2–C: this这zhèoriginal本来běn láiexactly就是jiù shìyou你nǐ(modifier / structural particle)的dematter事shì。 = This was your business from the start.; 3–A: he / him他tāoriginal原来yuán láito live住zhùat / in在zàiShanghai municipality…上海shàng hǎi。 = He used to live in Shanghai.

  • original原来yuán láithen / just就jiù does not carry this "of course" meaning.
  • I tried a second response with a name, time, place, or description changed.

This is supported productive practice. Compare meaning and structure; your answer need not copy the model. A partner or teacher must hear the spoken response to comment on pronunciation.

  • Without a condition, usually往往wǎng wǎng sounds unfinished: he / him他tāusually往往wǎng wǎngto arrive late迟到chí dào is weak; he / him他tā下雨天xià yǔ tiānusually往往wǎng wǎngto arrive late迟到chí dào works.
