Summary, notes, tables and flow charts — complete the right relationship
مُقدَّميبقى موقعك المحفوظ في هذا المتصفح. لا يكتمل استئناف الموقع الدرس أو الإجابة على أسئلته.
Keep the structure as you shorten the text
- Outcome: complete a summary, set of notes, table or flow chart using the right evidence and response method. Start with Reading orientation and the matching and completion overview. A museum handover note is useful only if it keeps each object attached to its location; a correct word in the wrong row still sends someone to the wrong place.
- These original mini-passages practise one decision at a time. They are not a full Reading paper, a timing target or an IELTS band prediction. A summary usually covers part of the passage. Gaps need not follow passage order, though the relevant evidence is often in one part. Read the local direction: copy passage words and select from a supplied list are different response methods.
Worked summary: keep the exception
- Original passage: “The gallery lends audio guides free of charge. Visitors pay a deposit for headphones, which is returned when the headphones are brought back.” Summary: “Audio guides are free, but headphones require a refundable ____.” Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE. Answer: deposit. The summary compresses two related conditions without turning the refundable deposit into an admission charge.
- Payment fits the topic but is not a copied source word. Headphones names the item, not the required deposit. Read across the whole summary: grammar can narrow the kind of word needed, but the contrast and meaning settle which word belongs there. If a supplied list instead offered security payment, selection would be a different task with its own direction.
Worked notes: read the group heading and the relationship
- Original passage: “The garden keeps summer seedlings in a shaded nursery. Mature plants remain outdoors even during hot weather.” Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE. The following note asks for the young plants’ location. Answer: nursery. Outdoors belongs to mature plants; shaded describes the location without naming it.
- Notes can omit articles and full sentences. Use their heading, indentation and labels to recover the relationship. Do not turn each isolated gap into a new sentence or copy a nearby word simply because it fits the topic.
Summer seedlings
- Location: ____
- Condition: shaded
- Mature plants: remain outdoors
Worked table: intersect the row with the column
- Original passage: “The north store holds tools in locked cabinets. The south store holds seed packets in open trays.” Instruction: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS FROM THE PASSAGE. Answer: cabinets or locked cabinets. Both identify the north store’s tool container; the fuller phrase also preserves its condition.
- Read the row label North and the column label Container together. Tools belongs to the contents column, while trays belongs to the south row. The locked cabinets enters three words and exceeds this limit. A maximum does not require you to use every allowed word.
| Store | Contents | Container |
|---|---|---|
| North | tools | ____ |
| South | seed packets | open trays |
Worked flow chart: choose a supplied word for the stage
- Original passage: “The team collected river water, passed it through a fine filter and examined the clear liquid under a microscope.” Supplied list: stored / filtered / heated / weighed. Answer: filtered. It paraphrases the middle action and fits “Water filtered”. The other actions are not stated for that stage.
- A flow chart uses boxes or stages connected by arrows. Here the numbered stages and arrows give the same reading order in text. Follow that process order inside the chart; it does not establish that every answer in a larger completion task follows passage order. In a supplied-list task, use the listed word even when it paraphrases the source rather than copying it.
- River water collected
↓
- Water ____
↓
- Clear liquid examined under a microscope
Guided practice: identify the relationship before the answer
- The next twelve tasks give a reading cue: three summaries, three note sets, three tables and three flow charts. Each layout has two typed passage-copy tasks and one supplied-word selection. Read both the source and the complete structure, then follow the direction printed in that question.
- For a copy task, keep the source form and count only the words you enter. For selection, use a listed word whose meaning fits; it may be a paraphrase. If rejected, check the item, row, stage, condition or exception first, then grammar and the limit. Feedback explains the intended evidence and a specific next repair.
Original passage: The museum replaced paper tickets with wristbands. Visitors kept the same wristband for every gallery; separate tickets were still needed for evening concerts.
Complete the summary:
A wristband gives access to the galleries, but evening ____ still require separate tickets.
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Follow but to the activity excluded from gallery access.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Concerts is the copied plural naming the exception. Galleries describes the access already covered by a wristband. Keep the exception when compressing the passage.
Original passage: A trial used porous tiles on one path and ordinary concrete on another. Water passed through the tiles, while it remained on the concrete surface.
Complete the summary:
Water went through the ____ but stayed on the concrete.
Instruction: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Match each material with its own result.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Tiles is the passage word for the permeable surface. Porous tiles also fits the two-word maximum; porous alone leaves the object unnamed. Concrete is the contrasted surface.
Original passage: The reading room extended its opening hours but did not buy any additional desks. Staff wanted existing places to be available for longer.
Complete the summary:
The change increased the room’s opening ____ rather than its capacity.
Instruction: Choose ONE word from the supplied list below. The list may paraphrase the passage; select by meaning.
Reading cue: Distinguish time available from the number of places.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Duration paraphrases how long the room opens. Capacity concerns places, frequency concerns how often, and cost concerns payment. In this supplied-list task, duration need not appear in the passage.
Original passage: For the planting trial, seeds were kept in trays indoors. Once shoots appeared, staff moved the trays to the courtyard. Spare pots remained in the shed.
Complete the notes:
Planting trial
- Initial location: indoors
- Move after: appearance of ____
- New location: courtyard
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Identify the event after which the move happens.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Shoots names the trigger for the move, not a storage place or a container. The heading groups the notes; the missing noun completes Move after: appearance of shoots.
Original passage: Walkers received waterproof maps at the gate. Ordinary leaflets were available at the café, but they did not show the new trail.
Complete the notes:
New trail
- Collect at: gate
- Navigation aid: ____ maps
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Count only the words you enter; maps is outside the gap.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Waterproof is copied as one word before maps, which is already supplied. Waterproof maps repeats that supplied noun and exceeds the one-word limit. Leaflets are the wrong document.
Original passage: The repairs can be completed only when the room is empty. Moving the chairs does not create enough space if visitors are still inside.
Complete the notes:
Repairs
- Required room condition: ____
- Moving chairs alone: insufficient
Instruction: Choose ONE word from the supplied list below. The list may paraphrase the passage; select by meaning.
Reading cue: Find the necessary condition rather than a possible improvement.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Vacant means empty, the required room condition. Spacious is not sufficient while visitors remain; noisy and decorated do not express the condition. Select from the list rather than inventing a copied answer.
Original passage: The east pond was shaded by trees and stayed cool. The west pond had no shade and warmed during the afternoon.
Complete the table:
| Pond | Afternoon condition |
|---|---|
| East | باردة |
| West | ____ |
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Read the West row and the Afternoon condition column together.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Warmed belongs to the west pond. Cool is the east-pond result. The row and column jointly identify the evidence; do not choose the first temperature word.
Original passage: In the first trial, wool filters trapped dust but let water pass. In the second, paper filters trapped both dust and water.
Complete the table:
| فلتر | Material that passed through |
|---|---|
| Wool | ____ |
| الورقة | neither dust nor water |
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Check the column’s relationship: passed through, not trapped.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Water passed through wool. Dust was trapped; paper belongs to a different row. The column asks what passed, not what was caught.
Original passage: The handheld device ran on batteries. The desktop device needed a wall socket. Neither device used sunlight.
Complete the table:
| Device | Power source |
|---|---|
| Handheld | ____ |
| Desktop | mains |
Instruction: Choose ONE word from the supplied list below. The list may paraphrase the passage; select by meaning.
Reading cue: Keep the device row attached to its own power source.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Batteries powered the handheld device. Mains belongs to the desktop, sunlight is expressly excluded and wind is unsupported. The list supplies words, not all of them passage copies.
Original passage: Workers first washed the jars. They then inspected them for cracks. Only jars that passed inspection were filled with honey.
Complete the flow chart:
- Jars were washed
↓
- Jars were ____ for cracks
↓
- Accepted jars were filled with honey
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Check the action between washing and filling.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Inspected is the copied action between washing and filling and fits “Jars were inspected for cracks”. Filled skips the check; washed repeats the earlier stage. Keep the sequence and the supplied grammatical form.
Original passage: The laboratory dried the leaves before grinding them. The resulting powder was placed in sealed bags, which were then labelled.
Complete the flow chart:
- Leaves dried
↓
- Leaves ground into powder
↓
- Powder placed in ____
↓
- Bags labelled
Instruction: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS FROM THE PASSAGE.
Reading cue: Find the destination of the powder, not the material being packed.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Bags or sealed bags names the container and fits the maximum. Leaves is the starting material, while powder is what goes into the container. A three-word phrase such as the sealed bags exceeds this local limit.
Original passage: A craft worker made a rough clay bowl, allowed it to dry, and finally heated it in a kiln until it hardened.
Complete the flow chart:
- Shape clay
↓
- Allow to dry
↓
- ____ in a kiln
Instruction: Choose ONE word from the supplied list below. The list may paraphrase the passage; select by meaning.
Reading cue: Use the purpose and place of the last process.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Fire names heating pottery in a kiln. Freeze, soak and polish do not describe that last process. Supplied words can paraphrase source actions; do not require the selected word to be a source copy.
Independent practice: twenty-four fresh sources
- Each layout now has six new mini-passages: four typed answers and two supplied-word selections. No reading cue points to the evidence. Keep before/current, retained/removed and accepted/refused distinctions attached to the right subject. A fluent-looking answer can describe a different row or stage.
- Spread the unit across sessions if useful, and choose your saved position deliberately when returning. These short cases build precise decisions; they do not reproduce the navigation, length or timing of a complete Reading paper. Explain the source relationship to yourself before opening the feedback.
Original passage: The market moved its vegetable stalls into the covered hall during winter. Sellers of flowers continued to trade in the square throughout the year.
Complete the summary:
In winter, vegetables were sold in the hall while ____ were still sold in the square.
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Flowers is copied from the source and identifies the goods that remained in the square. Vegetables moved indoors. Sellers names the people, not the goods that were sold; it does not preserve the completed summary’s meaning.

Complete the summary:
Once the replacement lift opened, the ramp was still used for ____ crates.
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.

Oversized preserves the exception after the new lift opened. Rear describes the ramp, and new describes the lift. Crates is already printed outside the gap.
Original passage: Researchers placed sensors in the roof space to record humidity. They measured temperature in the occupied rooms but did not measure roof-space temperature.
Complete the summary:
The roof-space sensors recorded ____; the temperature readings came from other rooms.
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Humidity is the measured roof-space variable. Temperature was recorded elsewhere, and the text explicitly excludes a roof-space temperature measurement.
Original passage: The volunteers repaired the wooden benches. Metal seats were replaced because corrosion had weakened their supports.

Instruction: Choose ONE word from the supplied list below. The list may paraphrase the passage; select by meaning.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today

Complete the notes:
Ceramics workshop
- Clothing to bring: ____
- Provided: tools and clay
- Food: bring lunch

- Ink pens: café only
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Pencil is the copied permitted tool in the reading room. Pens refers to the tool restricted to the café; notes names the writing rather than its tool.
Original passage: A roof inspection found no leaks. The building’s damp walls were caused by condensation, so staff improved ventilation rather than replacing roof tiles.
Complete the notes:
Damp walls
- Cause: ____
- Response: improved ventilation
- Roof replacement: unnecessary
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Condensation is the stated cause. Leaks were not found. Ventilation is the response, not the cause, and the heading restricts the notes to the damp-wall problem.

Complete the notes:
Weekday shuttle

- Handling access: ____
Instruction: Choose ONE word from the supplied list below. The list may paraphrase the passage; select by meaning.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today

| Pine | فتح |
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today

|---|---|
| Bicycle | ____ |
| Trailer | locks |

Transfer: one passage, four ways to organise it
- The seed-project passage appears in all four transfer questions so you can review each independently. It remains one source, not four fresh passages. The summary asks about storage limits near the end; the notes then return to the donation record near the beginning. Locate each relationship afresh.
- All four transfer gaps use ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE. Keep a table decision attached to its seed type and a flow-chart container attached to its process stage. The layout can change which detail is asked for without changing what the source actually says.
Original passage: The seed project began by recording each donation in a ledger. Staff dried the seeds, sealed them in packets, and stored the packets in a freezer. The project accepted vegetable seeds but refused flower seeds because its storage space was limited.
Complete the summary:
The project accepted only vegetable seeds because ____ space was limited.
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Storage identifies the limited space. Flower seeds were refused, not accepted. This summary asks about the end of the passage; the next layout may return to an earlier detail.
Original passage: The seed project began by recording each donation in a ledger. Staff dried the seeds, sealed them in packets, and stored the packets in a freezer. The project accepted vegetable seeds but refused flower seeds because its storage space was limited.
Complete the notes:
Donation records
- First action: record donation
- Record kept in: ____
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Ledger names the record’s location at the beginning of the passage. Freezer stores packets, not the donation record. Here you return to earlier evidence instead of assuming all gaps follow source order.
Original passage: The seed project began by recording each donation in a ledger. Staff dried the seeds, sealed them in packets, and stored the packets in a freezer. The project accepted vegetable seeds but refused flower seeds because its storage space was limited.
Complete the table:
| Seed type | Project decision |
|---|---|
| Vegetable | accepted |
| Flower | ____ |
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Refused belongs to flower seeds in the decision column. Accepted is the vegetable-seed decision. Limited describes storage space rather than a decision about a seed type.
Original passage: The seed project began by recording each donation in a ledger. Staff dried the seeds, sealed them in packets, and stored the packets in a freezer. The project accepted vegetable seeds but refused flower seeds because its storage space was limited.
Complete the flow chart:

↓
- Seeds sealed in ____
↓
- Packets stored in freezer
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Packets is the container before freezing. Ledger is a record, not packaging; freezer is the later storage location. This is another view of the same passage, not a fourth independent source.
Repair a row error and explain the maximum
- The private task supplies a table of blankets and drinking water. Repair a response that puts the water location in the blankets row, then explain whether a two-word maximum demands two words. Draft before opening the model and revise one evidence or length issue afterward.
- The model includes a sufficient one-word answer and a valid fuller phrase, with a checklist for your explanation. Your draft stays in this page; copy it before leaving. Recording that you compared and revised is reflection, not automatic correctness, demonstrated proficiency or an IELTS score.
Original passage: The hill station stores spare blankets in a wooden chest. Drinking water is kept in tanks outside.
Complete the table:
| Item | Storage |
|---|---|
| Spare blankets | ____ |
| Drinking water | tanks |
Instruction: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS FROM THE PASSAGE.
A reader enters “outside tanks” for the first row. Write a valid answer and explain why it belongs in that row. Then explain whether you must use both allowed words. Draft before opening the model and revise one exact issue afterward. Your draft stays in this page; copy it before leaving.
Both chest and wooden chest fit this row and direction. Explanation wording can vary. This page records that you compared and revised; it does not automatically assess the quality of your explanation or assign an IELTS score.
Later review: recover the method in four new contexts
- After a break, try one fresh question for each layout without reopening the worked cases. Name the exact row, category, contrast or stage that determines your answer. If you missed it, identify whether the problem was choosing evidence, following the response method or keeping the required form and length.
- Continue with sentence completion for reading a copied answer in a full sentence, or short-answer questions for identifying the requested person, quantity or place. Use a new passage to check your method; remembering a previous answer is a different achievement.
Original passage: The team kept the main path open during bridge repairs. It closed the riverside path because equipment occupied that route.
Complete the summary:
Bridge repairs left the main path open but led to closure of the ____ path.
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.

Complete the table:
| Orchard | Main fruit |
|---|---|
| Eastern | ____ |
| Western | apples |
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Pears is the eastern orchard’s fruit. Juice is its product and apples belongs to the western row; composting handles damaged fruit from both.
Original passage: Technicians tested the cables before connecting them to the panel. They switched on the power only after all connections were secure.
Complete the flow chart:
- Cables tested
↓
- Cables connected to the ____
↓
- Secure connections checked
↓
- Power switched on
Instruction: ONE WORD ONLY FROM THE PASSAGE.
Difficulty 1/5 · 100 coins + a small bonus on first completion today
Panel is the object to which the tested cables were connected. Power belongs to the later activation step. Secure connections are the condition before switching on, not the connection destination.
Read the source, the structure and the instruction together
- Recap: find the relevant passage section; read the summary relationship, note heading, table intersection or chart stage; decide whether to copy or select; and check meaning, form and the local limit. Do not assume source order, add words already outside a gap, or invent a synonym in a passage-copy task.
- Source checked on 19 October 2026: official IELTS Reading task guidance. All passages, layouts, questions and models here are originally authored teaching. Independent specialist and language review and learner trials remain pending. Completion of these local activities does not establish an official test result.
