呢 — “And you?” and “Where is …?”

Asking the same question back
- A new classmate says he is fine and asks about you. You answer and want to ask him back the same question.
- I我degree / adjective linker很good好，you你(and …? / softener)呢？ Wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne? — "I'm fine. And you?"
Noun + (and …? / softener)呢？: “and …?”
- (and …? / softener)呢 (ne) after a person or thing asks the same question about them: you你(and …? / softener)呢？, and you?; you你mama妈妈(and …? / softener)呢？, and your mum?
- It saves repeating the whole question. The listener knows the question from what was just said.
I我am是student学生，you你呢？
Complete: “I’m fine. And you?” 我很好，你____？

Where is …? with (and …? / softener)呢
- On its own, ……(and …? / softener)呢？ can ask where something is: I我(modifier / structural particle)的phone手机(and …? / softener)呢？ Wǒ de shǒujī ne? — "Where's my phone?"
- This works when you expected the thing to be there.

Thing + 呢 asks where something you expected to see is.
Answering
- Answer the full question, not just (and …? / softener)呢: A: I我am是China中国person人，you你(and …? / softener)呢？ B: I我am是British person英国人。
- (and …? / softener)呢 is light and unstressed, like (yes/no ?)吗.
Watch out
- Do not add (yes/no ?)吗 to a (and …? / softener)呢 question: you你(and …? / softener)呢？, not you你(and …? / softener)呢(yes/no ?)吗？
- (and …? / softener)呢 needs something said before it, so the listener knows which question you mean.
你呢吗？ is a correct way to say “And you?”
