The production proposal goes from text to vision to document.
Read the play as a theatre-maker, form one governing concept, and write a proposal the examiner can see.
Choose a published play you have not studied, and plan the design and theoretical staging of the whole play.
The proposal is at most 12 pages and 4,000 words, and is worth 20% at HL.
The read asks what the play demands: the given circumstances, the facts the text fixes; the spine, the protagonist's through-line of want; the action units, where want meets obstacle; and the world, with its rules and costs.
The read finds a mortgaged house, a spine in the daughter's fight to leave, units that each strip her of an ally, and a world where love is currency.
The one-sentence argument: this staging shows a family eating its young to keep its house.
A concept is not a decorative theme like loneliness. It is a performance argument: the room shrinks as each daughter leaves.
A concept that cannot stage the ending is a mood, not a concept.
The set's walls track in each act.
Costume holds the period but fades.
Light narrows to a lamp's circle.
Sound lets the house's own noises rise as people leave.
And the space can trap the audience.
Where the audience sits decides what they are.
End-on or proscenium makes fourth-wall voyeurs.
A traverse makes trapped witnesses who cannot intervene.
Promenade makes them ghosts.
The opening image: the family eats at a table filling the stage, walls wide.
The pivot: the walls have halved the room.
The final image: the parents face the table in a pool the size of a plate.
Structure the document in five parts: the play and its world, briefly; the concept, stated and unpacked; the three moments; the design areas, each tied to the concept; and the audience's position.
Three classic failures: the literature essay, analysis where direction belongs; the mood board, pictures without an argument; and the concept drop, a strong sentence the pages never cash.
Check yourself.
The protagonist's through-line is the spine.
Loneliness is a theme, not a concept.
A traverse audience becomes trapped witnesses.
The three moments are the opening, the pivot and the final image.
And the limits are 12 pages and 4,000 words.
