A1 reading is not reading everything; it is reading for the purpose. A1
A note on a door, a sign on a wall and a text on a phone each want something from you.
Find what, and you have read them. Be a detective: who wrote it, for whom, and what must I do? Three questions, and short texts open like doors.
Public signs are laws in two words. They use capitals, no polite words, and often no verbs at all.
NO PARKING is the rule, not a suggestion. MIND THE STEP is a warning. PUSH and PULL tell you the door opens one way, and STAFF ONLY tells you this door is not yours. NO PARKING 是规则不是建议;MIND THE STEP 是提醒;STAFF ONLY 是此门不对你开放。
One sign, one job: read it once and act.
A note or message is a small text with a job. Read it in three steps: the names, the time and place, the action. Here is a worked note: Lin, football starts at 4.15 today, not 5, bring your blue shirt, Dad. The names are Lin and Dad. The time is 4.15, and the small word NOT changes it from five. The actions: bring the shirt, remember the change. That is the whole note, and you never translated a word.
To scan is to walk your eyes quickly over the page looking for one thing: a time, a name, a price.
Know what you are looking for before your eyes move.
In the class-trip message, the day and date are Saturday the fourteenth of May; the time and place are 8.30 at the school gate; the bring-list is lunch and water, and walking shoes go on your feet.
Numbers and capital letters are the brightest stones; grab them and stop.
Meet one new word in a short text?
Let the sentence guess it for you. The soup was too hot, so I blew on it: by the end of the sentence you know what blowing is for. Do not stop at the new word; finish the sentence, then look back. The soup was too hot, so I blew on it:读完这句你就知道 blew 是干嘛的。
And if the word is not the action and not the time, it can wait for the dictionary.
Watch out for three traps. Do not translate word by word: the three questions are faster. Do not miss the small change-makers, not, at, before and after: class is at eight and class is before eight are different days of your life. And remember that capital letters are the skeleton of the text: names, days, months and rules hold it up.
Check yourself. Name the three questions of every short text.
What does STAFF ONLY want from you?
In the class-trip message, what time, what place, and what goes on the bring-list?
And catch the trap: the class is at eight, or the class is before eight. at 8 和 before 8 差在哪?
If the questions fire without thinking, the detective is working.
