Chinese words end softly, with a vowel or an n.
中文词结尾轻柔,英文词常以辅音结尾。
English words end with consonants, and often with a chain of them.
词尾是单词的门:关上它,别让听者走错房间。
The ending is the door of the word: close it, or your listener walks into the wrong room. Want and wanted are different words, and the only difference is the ending. The good news is that English endings follow three small systems, and they never change their rules.
好消息是:英文词尾只有三套小系统,规则从不改变。
The ending -ed has exactly three sounds, and the last sound of the verb chooses. After t or d, you need an extra syllable: want-ed, need-ed. After a voiceless sound like k, the ending is a small t: walked, watched, stopped. After everything else it is a d: played, cleaned, arrived. Say the verb alone, feel its last sound, and the ending chooses itself.
-ed 只有三种读音,由动词最后一个音决定:t、d 后面加一个音节;清辅音后读 t;其余读 d。 先说动词本身,感受尾音,词尾自己会选。
The plural s follows the same logic as -ed, with three sounds. After a hissing sound like s, sh or ch, the ear needs an extra syllable: bus-iz, watch-iz. After a voiceless sound like k or p, the s stays thin: books, cups. After everything else it hums: dogs, pens, cars. The spelling never changes; only the sound does.
复数 -s 同样三种读音:咝音后加音节 bus-iz;清辅音后读薄薄的 s:books;其余读带声的 z:dogs。 拼写不变,声音在变。
Because Chinese syllables end in a vowel or an n, the chains at the ends of English words are a new muscle.
中文音节以元音或 n 结尾,英文词尾辅音串是新肌肉。
The endings that disappear most are the ones after a consonant: most, must, last, first, old, helped. I am first must end with two sounds after the vowel: r-s-t. And the past tense is where it matters most: I help her and I helped her are one sound apart.
最容易丢的是 most、must、first、helped 这类词尾。
Practise by saying the endings louder than feels natural for a week; loud endings settle into soft, correct ones.
练习方法:一周内把词尾读得比自然更响,响词尾会沉淀为又轻又对的词尾。
Watch out for three traps. First, do not rescue a cluster with a vowel: most is not mos-te. Second, the written -ed never sounds like the letters e-d; it is t, d or id. Third, wanted sounds like want-id, and that is the whole story. Practise slowly, close every door, and then bring the speed back.
三个陷阱:不要给辅音串加元音(most 不是 mos-te);-ed 从不读字母 e-d;wanted 读作 want-id。 先慢速把每个门关好,再提速。
Check yourself. Name the three sounds of -ed with one example each. Why do buses and watches need an extra syllable?
自测:-ed 三种读音各举一例;为什么 buses、watches 要加一个音节?
Which is right with yesterday: I ask him, or I asked him?
配 yesterday 的是 ask 还是 asked?
And say first, must and helped with the endings fully closed.
把 first、must、helped 的词尾完整关上。
If all four come without pausing, the doors are closing.
四题不卡,门就关好了。
